Statement by the City’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille City sends team to inspect Philippi Horticultural Area The City of Cape Town has noted some reports yesterday about flooding in the Philippi Horticultural Area (PHA). This area, along with many others in the city, was affected by unusually high rainfall over the last few weeks. As part of our efforts to build a Caring and responsive City, the City’s Disaster Management Centre has coordinated a multi-disciplinary team that will inspect the area today, 5 September 2013. The team includes representatives of the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre and Roads and Stormwater Department; the Western Cape Government’s Agriculture Ministry; and AgriSA. Once the investigation is complete, recommendations will be made on what appropriate action is taken, if any. It is revealing that Mr Sonday, the proponent of yesterday’s complaints against the City, declined a request to attend the inspection meeting today. This begs the question again, how sincere is he about the real issues confronting the PHA? Mr Sonday must not play ANC politics with the flooding of the PHA and should rather become part of the solution.
