Statement by the Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille N2 Express Service to be ready for implementation from July 2014 The City of Cape Town and its public transport partners have taken another step towards the realisation of the N2 Express Service from Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain to the CBD. This follows today’s signing of the Heads of Agreement (HoA), which will help pave the way for the introduction of the N2 Express Service by Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS), the Mitchells Plain Route 6 Taxi Association, and the CATA/CODETA 15-15 Taxi Association. The signing of the Head of Agreement is part of an extensive consultation process between the City and its partners. In terms of the HoA, and in agreement with these partners, the N2 Express Service will be ready for implementation from July 2014. An agreement has in principle been reached that a partial service will be implemented as soon as possible in the new year. The City is determined to make this process as inclusive as possible to ensure that the final agreement can lead to the provision of a smooth and sustainable service. It must be noted that a number of events beyond the City’s control have delayed the full implementation of the service. These include: the impact of the strike in the automobile industry the lengthy negotiations related to finalising this agreement as the City seeks an inclusive and sustainable agreement with industry role players the amount of time required for the training of taxi drivers who will absorbed into the service. The construction of the infrastructure and bus stops for the service will continue to ensure that we meet the new deadline. We will continue to engage our with our public transport partners to ensure that we deliver on our commitment to create an integrated public transport system.
