TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY
PAUL M. BASS, JR.
When Paul M. Bass Jr. died in March 2010, he left behind a wide circle of friends.
Among those were legendary philanthropists Annette and Harold Simmons.
To honor his life, they donated $2 million to establish and endow the Paul M. Bass Center for Neurosurgical Innovation, a component of the Harold and Annette Simmons Comprehensive Center for Research and Treatment in Brain and Neurological
Disorders at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
As good friends, the Simmonses knew how much Mr. Bass valued the world-class neurosurgical care at UT Southwestern. He was a beneficiary of that expertise in 1983 when he suffered a stroke and became a patient at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
A young neurosurgeon there performed a bypass, restoring Mr. Bass’ speech and mobility. Mr. Bass credited
Dr. Duke Samson, former Chairman of Neurological Surgery and current Professor of Neurological Surgery at UT Southwestern, with saving his life.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
ROGER GOODELL
Commissioner of the
National Footbal League
Mr. Bass served for 13 years as Chairman of the board of Southwestern Medical Foundation and spent three decades as a civic volunteer dedicated to improving health care for all Dallas residents. Apart from his numerous civic responsibilities, he was Vice Chairman of First Southwest Co., an investment-banking firm based in Dallas and served on the board of directors of First Southwest Asset Management Inc.
Commissioner Goodell is the eighth chief executive in the NFL’s 93-year history. He was chosen by the NFL club owners to be commissioner on August 8, 2006 and took office on September 1, 2006. Mr. Goodell has focused his priorities on making the game safer and better, and successfully growing the NFL’s popularity and all 32 NFL franchises through innovation. Fan interest in the NFL has soared under his leadership, including the largest television audiences in league history, enormous growth in online and social media engagement, and other measures of business success.
In his first eight seasons as commissioner, Mr. Goodell has addressed a wide range of issues to improve the NFL, including player health and safety; the medical needs and pensions of retired players; personal conduct; revenue sharing; stadium construction; media innovation; and international development. In 2011, his leadership helped secure a landmark 10-year Collective Bargaining
Agreement with the NFL Players Association, the longest in the history of professional sports. That was followed by long-term extensions of the NFL’s television contracts. The nine-year agreements with CBS, FOX, and NBC are the longest ever for NFL broadcast television contracts and continue the NFL’s tradition of being the only sports league that shows all of its regular-season and playoff games on free, over-the-air television.
During his tenure, Mr. Goodell also has strengthened the league’s anti-steroids policy, launched innovative media initiatives and a new series of international regular-season games, improved the NFL’s news media access policies to better serve fan interest, and revamped and enhanced the league’s programs to support and assist players and former players. Prior to being named commissioner, Mr. Goodell managed an array of football and business operations during a 24-year career in the NFL.

Bronxville, New York.
Roger Goodell and his wife Jane live in the New York City area with their twin daughters.
Babe Laufenberg has been the sports anchor for CBS 11 for the last 15 years. He also hosts “The Score With Babe Laufenberg,” Sunday nights at 10:30. In addition, Babe has been the analyst for the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network for 18 years. He has twice been selected as the “Sportscaster of the Year” for the state of Texas by the National
