The Planning & Construction team is actively working major projects including the Science and Engineering Bldg (SENG), Events Center, and the renovation of the existing Science Bldg. The Physical Plant team includes five work groups; Maintenance, Grounds, Electrical, Plumbing/HVAC, and Custodial. Their responsibilities include maintaining 890,675 square feet of General Fund buildings along with 250 acres of landscaped property. Our Facilities Services administrative team is the glue that keeps our teams connected. Each team is committed to the continued improvement of the UCCS campus and serving you. Project Spotlight: Event Center We are heading into the final stretch for the construction of the Events Center. Two big milestones are coming up: delivery of the wood for the gym floor, and removal of the pedestrian walkway. The walkway should be dismantled in midOctober making access through the area much easier. We’re still on schedule for completion on December 31, 2009 and our grand opening celebration on January 22, 2010. Featured Crew: The electric shop has a wealth of experience, with 2 journeyman electricians – Doug Martin and Brian Karnes, 1 master electrician – David Shurtleff and 1 electrical apprentice/ Carpenter – Sammy Wilding. They are responsible for maintaining all of the campus electrical systems, including street/parking/sidewalk/ building lighting, interior lighting, electrical panels, transformers, devices, emergency generators and classroom clocks. This year’s projects included completion of numerous energy conservation measures (ECM's) in the Engineering Building, with a monthly average savings of $2000. We helped save thousands of dollars on the new West Lawn by reusing lighting poles from the Eagle Rock Modulars. Energy efficient florescent wallpacks were installed at the modulars to reduce the lighting loads. The old light poles were retrofitted with smaller Metal Halide lamps and reused along the new Spine. We helped We missed a few – a very important few!! Last month, we featured our Custodial crew and missed mentioning Anne Smith who services Cragmor Hall and Yvonne Vigil and Michael Friloux who service Dwire Hall. They are definitely valued ELECTRICAL reduce the energy demand at Eagle Rock, while saving approximately $20,000 in materials for the West Lawn. The electric shop also started a de-lamping program this past spring that resulted in energy savings throughout the campus. Currently, we are working in the Library, installing new motion sensors, and developing new lighting scheduling and strategies to help reduce the high energy demand in the El Pomar Building. Geranium Harvest!! There has been a tiny helpful addition put into the Facilities Work Order system. When you submit a work request on line, now there is a reminder on the webpage to use eight 9’s (99999999) in the speedtype field to satisfy the required field when the request is for regular maintenance or repairs and not chargeable. and appreciated members of our custodial team. A little known tidbit about Anne – she is the Facilities Puzzle Queen! We keep a jigsaw puzzle on our counter for vendors and customers to stop and plug in a piece (like stopping to smell the flowers) Last week, our Grounds crew harvested 100 Geraniums and gave away almost all of them to members of our campus community in an effort to “BRING THE COLOR INSIDE”. Care tips: Put in a south facing window, water deeply once a week (in a sink-water and let drain), and if you want blooms—fertilize! Next summer, they can be planted outside again. Good Luck! on their busy way. Anne always spends time after her shift plugging in MANY pieces. She loves the puzzles! A big Thank You goes out to Frank Hammitt for supplying most of the puzzles.
