The Planning & Construction team is actively working on minor and major construction projects. The Physical Plant team includes five work groups: Maintenance, Outdoor Services, Electrical, Plumbing/HVAC, and Custodial. Their responsibilities include maintaining campus academic and administrative buildings. Facilities Services administrative team is the glue that keeps our teams connected. Each team is committed to the continued improvement of the UCCS campus and serving you. Facilities Services is involved in many campus wide projects. Facilities is currently supporting Campus Auxiliaries Services projects throughout campus. The renovation of Café 65 is complete (the previous Overlook)! Berger Hall will receive new Recycling Costs in Half ceiling and lighting, a permanent stage, new By: David Shurtleff audio/visual systems, wood flooring, and an The UCCS Facilities Services Electric Shop has recently implemented a overall up-grade to the general finishes. new fluorescent lamp recycling program with the purchase of an Air Cycle Bulb Eater®. This new program will save the university up to 50% on lamp recycling costs each year. Last year Facilities Services spent over $8000 to recycle 12,000+ fluorescent lamps removed from the campus academic and administrative buildings. Because these lamps contain mercury, they cannot be trashed in dumpsters as solid waste. The Bulb Eater® is an OSHA and EPA compliant machine capable of crushing more than 1300 4’ fluorescent lamps inside a 55 gallon steel drum. The process is fully enclosed and filtered, so that the glass, aluminum, and harmful vapors are contained. When full, the drums are picked up and transported to an EPA permitted lamp recycling facility where the contents are separated, treated, and ultimately reused. Elizabeth’s Impact Elizabeth from Disabilities Services coordinates Communication Access Services and she also provides sign language interpreting. She’s very happy to be here at UCCS and back once again in Colorado! Elizabeth lived on the Western Slope for nine years and then moved to Montana. She then moved again to Wyoming. She says, “It’s great to be home again.” Here on campus you will see Elizabeth around Campus Services on a regular basis to assist our maintenance team through translating . She asks that you please stop and say hello! Elizabeth would also like to extend a warm thank you to Facilities as well as the greater UCCS Community for their support and encouragement during her transition into this new position! Fire Watch Working a total of 467 hours, many staff members from Facilities Services helped with the fire watch on top of the bluff from 7:00am9:00pm everyday from June 27th through July 8th. Facilities Services contributed to the campus and community support effort by providing support in a variety of ways. During the fire watch, there were several positive interactions with the neighbors who were all appreciative that UCCS was keeping an eye out on the bluff. Facilities Services would also like to extend their appreciation and thanks to the Chancellor’s office for the recognition given to those who helped in the fire watch. Congratulations Brad Thacker!!! After a tough competition against nine other delicious desserts at the Facilities Summer BBQ, Brad Thacker from Outdoor Services won over the taste buds of our five judges and became this year’s Dessert Contest winner! Brad’s dessert was Mom’s Kahlua Mousse Bars! And despite the name, Brad has said under oath, that he did indeed make them. Campus Services Garden By: Brenda Bland The new Plant Select garden in front of CSB was installed this summer. Students from the Sustainability Senior Seminar were seeking a project that coincided with my need for a new location for the Plant Select flowers that I was receiving. Together , the bed idea was born. Plant Select is designed to introduce, identify, and distribute the best plants for landscapes and gardens for this region. Each year I am given a select number of plants to introduce on campus. This year we planted Chocolate flowers, Hopflower Oregano, Kitzley’s Ghost Honeysuckle, Cherry Skullcap, Remembrance Columbine, Seven Son Flower, and Ruby Voodoo Rose. In addition, all of these plants are low water/drought tolerant plants. Myself and Katherine Albert (student employee) and Larissa Galens (graduate student) placed the Plant Select flowers and signed them (with the help of the sign shop who designed and created all of the signs used). This was a wonderful collaboration between students and full time employees to create something beautiful for the enjoyment of others.
