Interpreting the Frequency Distributions Report
Variables
The items from the NSSE survey appear in the
left column in the same order and wording as
they appear on the instrument.
Benchmark
Items that comprise the five
“Benchmarks of Effective
Educational Practice” are indicated
by the following:
LAC=Level of Academic Challenge
ACL=Active and Collaborative
Learning
SFI=Student-Faculty Interaction
EEE=Enriching Educational
Experiences
SCE=Supportive Campus
Environment
Variable Names
The name of each variable appears in
the first column for easy reference to
your raw data file and the Mean
Comparisons report.
Sample
The Frequency Distributions report is based on information from all randomly selected
students (including those from census administrations) for both your institution and your
comparison institutions. Targeted and locally administered oversamples and other nonrandomly selected students are not included in this report.
NSSE 2010 Engagement Item Frequency Distributions
Class
Frequency
distributions are
reported separately for
first-year students and
seniors. Institutionreported class ranks
are used.

Count
The Count column
represents the actual
number of students
who responded to the
particular option in
each question. Counts
are unweighted.
Column Percentage (%)
This column presents the weighted percentage of students responding to the
particular option in each question.
Weighting
Weights adjusting for gender and enrollment status (and by institutional size for comparison groups) are applied to the percentage column (%) of this report. Weights are computed
separately for first-year students and seniors. Weighted results present a more accurate representation of your institution and comparison group students. Only the column percents are
weighted. The counts are the actual number of respondents. Because the counts are unweighted and the column percentages are weighted, you will not be able to calculate the
column percent directly from the count numbers. Additional details about weighting can be found on the NSSE Web site. nsse.iub.edu/links/institutional_reporting
