Brian Morehouse and Dean Morehouse In 16 seasons under coach Brian Morehouse the Hope Flying Dutch have won 20-or-more games fourteen consecutive seasons, claimed ten Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) titles, made 11 trips to the NCAA tournament, including two Final Four appearances, and won the Division III national championship in 2006. The 201112 Flying Dutch posted a 22-5 record. In 16 seasons under Morehouse the Flying Dutch are 397-68. Coach Morehouse was chosen the 2005-06 Division III national coach of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the publication DIII News. The Detroit Free Press included coach Brian Morehouse among the state's top sports figures in 2006 and among the candidates for the newspaper's annual "Michigan's Best" honor roll. Three times in his career, (2001-02, 2002-03 and 2008-09), he has been voted the Regional Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). He has been named the Michigan Collegiate women's basketball coach of the year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan three times in his career (2001-02, 2007-08, 2011-12). He entered the 2011-12 season ranked second among NCAA Division III coaches by winning percentage (.853). A 1991 Hope graduate who serves as director of the college's Dow Physical Education and Health Center and DeVos Fieldhouse, Morehouse is familiar with the Hope basketball scene having served in the men's program for a number of years. He was the men's junior varsity coach for two years, compiling a record of 30-9. He was a student assistant coach through his undergraduate years. He graduated with honors from Hope with a major in business administration and minors in history, psychology and sociology and earned a teaching certificate for secondary education. Morehouse's basketball roots run deep. His father, Dean, was the boy's basketball coach at Fremont (Mich.) High School. He joined son Brian as an assistant coach in 2000-01. Brian and Dean were honored as "Hometown Heroes" during the 2006 National Baby Food Festival in Fremont. He contributed a chapter to the book, "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inside Basketball," chronicling an experience from the 2006 national championship run (February, 2009). In November, 2010, he was profiled in a major article in the Grand Rapids Press. He was a contributor to a book Leadership Off the Wall (2010) by Paul B. Thornton. The author invited contributions of quotes relating to a guiding principle that has led the individual to achieve success. Morehouse displays a quote in his office by Hope alumnus Max DePree, who is chairman emeritus of Herman Miller Inc. and the author of books on leadership. The quote: "Leaders should be able to Stand Alone, Take the Heat, Bear the Pain, Tell the Truth and Do What's Right". He currently represents MIAA coaches on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Conference Captains Committee and serves as a member of the WBCA board. He also serves as a member of the board of the Hands Up Fund, and is involved with Special Olympics and Holland Area Hospice. His wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Hain, a 1993 Hope graduate, played in the college's basketball program for two years. The Morehouses have two daughters, Megan and Emma. The Morehouses are members of Calvary Reformed Church in Holland. The nearest, our next door neighbors on both sides, were so close we shared common walls. Our family lived in a row house- a pattern quite the norm in our Pennsylvania German mid-sized city of Allentown”…John Hollenbach, 1992 Read this and more in the 2013 edition of the HASP Review. Either send the form to the HASP office or e-mail tanis@hope.edu or you may call me at 396-2228 for additional information. Thank you - Elliot Tanis Professors Carrie Bredow and Sonja Trent-Brown (Psychology) would like HASP volunteers for their Developmental Psychology classes. Those who have participated in the past have spoken highly of their experience. You will meet with 3 or 4 groups of 5 or 6 students and share your insights as you reflect on your adult years and respond to questions from the students. Carrie Bredow’s classes meet on Wednesday, December 5, 8:25 - 9:20 and 9:25 -10:20. Sonja Trent-Brown’s classes meet on Thursday, December 6, 9:30 10:45 and 3:00 - 4:15. They would like 6 HASP volunteers for each of these sections. Thus far 9 HASP members have volunteered so there is a need for 13 more volunteers. Professor Charles Green is teaching a First Year Seminar (FYS) on the theme of Culture, Control, and Community for students in the Phelps Scholars program (an academic and residential program with a multicultural group of students who are interested in issues of race and culture). Their semester-end project is a research poster related to the class theme. The poster presentations will be in the Maas Auditorium on Tuesday, December 4, from 4:00-5:30. (1) They invite all of you to simply show up, read the posters, and ask questions. (2) He would like 12-15 HASP volunteers who would be willing to come 30 minutes early, get a brief training on their grading rubric, and then help grade 4-5 posters each. I am willing to volunteer. Indicate the Professor and time/date preference. _______________________________________________________________________________ Name_______________________________ Phone______________ e-mail__________________ SPECIAL EVENTS HASP Holiday Celebration: Amahl and the Night Visitors, Monday, December 3, 2012 Celebrate the holidays in the magnificent acoustics of Fountain Street Church with a performance of Gian Carlo Menotti’s beloved adaptation of the story of the nativity and the adoration of the magi. Grand Valley State University Music Department faculty members, students, and guest artists, will present Amahl and the Night Visitors in concert version. One of the most popular operas of all time, it is the story of how a crippled, young shepherd boy’s life changes forever when he sees an amazing star as big as a window. When three foreign kings following the star in their search for a wondrous child encounter Amahl and his mother, the result is a timeless and inspiring message of how faith, charity, unselfish love and good deeds can work miracles. Composed specifically as the first opera to be written for television, this was the first U.S. network television Christmas special to become an annual holiday tradition. The HASP bus will leave the Holland Municipal Stadium at 6:30 p.m. and return at approximately 10:30 p.m. Cost for the evening is $5.00 per person. Deadline for sign up is Tuesday, November 21. Reservation form is in the back of this bulletin. As you learned at our Annual Business meeting we are starting our monthly program meetings this year 10 minutes early to spend a little time remembering our beginnings. Below is the history shared by former HASP president Norm Lunderberg at our October 2, 2012, meeting: I would like to share with you three things: First, how HASP operated in its earlier years, second, relate more about the vision of HASP and finally, how this vision was set up within our constitution and bylaws. HASP Early Operations We had a humble beginning. Our office and conference room were in a no longer existing Butler type hut that was originally used by Hope College during World War II. This was located where the parking lot is on Columbia and 12th. Quite a contrast to what HASP has now. Our classes were all over the campus. We met in the Presidents room at Graves, in lecture halls, and in unused classrooms. We did learn a lot about where students were getting their education. More on vision of HASP Jacob Nyenhuis told HASP at our July meeting the story of how John Hollenbach as our founder and Hope President John Jacobson developed HASP. When HASP was started, there were about 30 Life Long Learning Institutions similar to our HASP. To spread the concept of elder learning, Professor Hollenbach was visiting other Michigan Colleges telling them about this concept. Three years after the start of HASP, there was a tenfold increase in lifelong learning institutions in the United States. Today, there are thousands of elder learning groups in the United State and in the world. John Hollenbach and President Jacobson had Hope College on the leading and cutting edge of elder learning. Vision in the Constitution and Bylaws After HASP was started, a Committee was formed to take their vision and set up the structure of HASP and formulate the relationship of HASP and Hope College. As a member of that committee, we set up the original concepts, strategy, and words for the HASP Constitution and Bylaws. May I share with you the foundation and structure that was established and became the organization that you know as HASP. One can quickly go to the web page for Hope College and find Hope Academy of Senior Professionals. There one will find our purpose in our Constitution and Bylaws. Article II – Nature and Purpose In our Constitution first words describe HASP as a “peer-led Institution”. John Hollenbach and John Jacobson believed HASP should be exactly that – a volunteer run retirement institution. Eder learning institutions are different in how they are structured and operate. Many Lifelong learning operations are run and directed by a Dean or Administrator within the Educational Institution. In some of these institutions, one cannot even order a pad of paper and pencil without college approval. This control can be also over the type of classes, content and cost. HASP has received a wonderful opportunity and also a trusted responsibility in the way it was designed. It was in this time frame that HASP held a multi-state meeting with many institutions to compare programs and operations. It was there that we learned HASP has been given what I like to call “a holy grail” from Hope College. As an organization and as individuals, we must do everything we can to be responsible recipients of this trust. The next words that follow “peer-led Institution” describe HASP as “a branch of Hope College”. These words were legal terms provided by Jim Townsend from HASP and Joel Bowens from Hope College. The words make HASP as much a part of the college as any other department e.g. the Chemistry or English Departments. We are a part of the college. As such – our equipment, Scholarships and Endowment Funds belong to Hope College. As a part of the college we fall within the insurance protection and also use Hope College staff support and payroll functions for our Executive Director and assistant. In addition to the term “branch” are these words. “HASP is subject to superintending control by the President of Hope College. The membership of HASP has responsibility for designing, managing and carrying out its various activities and programs.” These legal terms expressed in layman terms mean that the President of Hope has all the trump cards but we have the responsibility to run HASP. We had one other interesting item within our Bylaws that is how we are organized as shown in the composition of the Board of Directors. “The President, Vice-President, Executive Director, Treasurer and the Chairpersons of Standing Committees shall be ex-officio voting members of the Board of Directors while holding office.” When a company or firm is structured it has a Board of Directors and Operating Components. This is how Hope College is organized and how most firms are structured. HASP is different. Our Board of Directors and our Operating units are one. One of our members was an Organization Manager Professor from a Midwest college and had doubts about this idea. Over time we have shown that we operate successfully by having all parties of the organization at the Board of Director Meeting. Enjoy the responsibility as a member of HASP.
