Time:

Place:
Haworth Conference Center, Hope College
Program:
The Changing Scale of Conservation
Helen Taylor, Michigan State Director, The Nature Conservancy
The April monthly program will be presented by the Nature Conservancy, an international organization
dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which we all depend. They currently have programs in 35
countries and all 50 states. Helen Taylor, Michigan State Director for The Nature Conservancy, discusses the
changing scale of conservation and the shifts in land protection strategies, from site to systems. She will
describe how land protection has become a conservation strategy at the landscape scale of the Great Lakes.
Helen Taylor has spent more than 25 years working on Great Lakes protection, policy and conservation. She
joined The Nature Conservancy in 1996 to lead its Great Lakes Program, and since 1999 has served as state
director of its Michigan Chapter. She also serves on the board of the Conservancy’s Great Lakes Project. Prior
to joining the Conservancy, she spent nine years working in the environmental policy field with a concentration
in Great Lakes issues, pollution prevention, waste and public involvement. Helen was recently appointed by
Governor Rick Snyder to serve as a commissioner and his representative on the Great Lakes Commission. The
Commission’s mission is to promote the orderly, integrated, and comprehensive development, use and
conservation of the Great Lakes basin water resources.
In March of 2003, Helen was appointed by Governor Granholm to serve on the Michigan Land Use Leadership
Council, and also was appointed by Governor Granholm to serve as a member of the Agriculture Preservation
Fund Board from 2004 to 2007.
Currently, Helen serves on the editorial board of advisors for Bridge Magazine, and the board of directors for
Sustainable Water Works. She also serves on the external advisory board of University of Michigan’s Erb
Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise, the Department of Environmental Quality’s Water Use Advisory
Council and on the board of Heart of the Lakes Center for Land Conservation Policy. Helen holds a degree in
philosophy from Northwestern University, where she graduated with honors.

COMMUNICATIONS
Communications Chair: Lorelle Eberly, jakelorelle@sbcglobal.net
LAST CALL! Thanks to all who submitted writings for the 2014 edition of the HASP Review. But there is
still time (for all you procrastination type writers). Deadline is April 15 (sound familiar?). We now offer a new
incentive: you may submit your contribution listing only “Anonymous” as the author if you fear retribution.
But we also offer a Witness Protection Plan for those who fear but whose conscience tells them they have to
identify themselves. Contact any member of the committee (who, at the moment, are traveling incognito but
whose names are in a secret file in the HASP office).

Interesting Opportunities for Involvement with Hope Students
Here are two new and interesting requests from Hope College faculty. You may reply directly to the Hope
professors but please copy me on your e-mail: Elliot Tanis, tanis@hope.edu.
1. Professor Courtney Peckens (Engineering Department) sent the following request: The Hope College student
chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is looking for experienced engineering mentors to help with a
new project that the chapter is in the process of applying for. While the project is not yet determined, the
student chapter is focusing on water remediation, water distribution, and latrine design projects in South
America or Africa. Typical tasks of the mentor would include meeting with students during the design process
and reviewing documents prior to submission to the national organization EWB-USA; it is estimated that this
would require on average 6-8 hours of mentoring per month. While international travel is not necessary for the
mentor, it may be a possibility if he or she has interest in this. For more information please email Courtney
Peckens
at
peckens@hope.edu. You
can
find
additional
information
at
http://www.hope.edu/student/life/ewb/index.html about previous projects.
2. Professor Marc Baer (History Department) is teaching a class on British and Ireland history since 1700. On
September 18, 2014, the Scottish government will hold a referendum on independence from Britain. The
question will be: “Should Scotland be an independent country?” On Wednesday, April 16th from noon to
1 in the Martha Miller Center rotunda on the ground floor, the students in this class will present three 10minute panels on this referendum. One panel will give the case for the Scots becoming an independent nation, a
second on why they should remain in the UK, and the 3rd on predicting the outcome. HASP members are
invited to attend and ask questions. For additional information, contact baer@hope.edu.
Tulip Time Trolley Guides Needed
More Tulip Time Trolley Guides are needed for festival this year that runs Saturday, May 3rd through Saturday,
May 10th. Guides attend a training session in mid April that includes materials and extensive script for narrating
the seventy five (75) minute tours. Guides are required to wear a Dutch costume provided by the Tulip Time
festival office if they do not have one of their own.
A guide may wish to be available two different days or more. How many tours do you want? Four? Six?
Would you like to do mornings or afternoons? In effect, you determine your own schedule. Snowbirds are
welcome. We will contact you in the south.

HASP Office News

Constant Contact Email Messages: We use a program called Constant Contact that allows us to send
messages to all HASP members concerning info that is relative to all, or notifications that we need to
make. The messages list HASP as the sender and the body of the email is a blue box with the HASP
logo at the top. If you are not receiving these emails, please look in your Spam box as everyone should
be on that list that has an email. Please let us know if you are not receiving them.
Parking for Monthly Program and courses: Just a reminder now that the snow is melting, the 7th Street
parking ramp is an option for parking. It is a short 1 block walk to the office for courses and a 2 block
walk to the Haworth. There is a sidewalk that runs right along the Raymond A. James building.
