Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance: Are We Post Racial? - Sarah Salguera
As the US experiences dramatic demographic shifts, is it correct to say that we have achieved a “post racial”
society? How do we explain an increase in overtly expressed positive racial attitudes along with increasing
racial disparities? This session explores relevant issues related to racial equity in contemporary US society and
how the work of the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance serves to promote racial equity. Participants will gain
a framework for understanding the system of racial inequity and gain insights into how to foster a racially
equitable community.
Sarah Salguera is the Program Director for the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance where she is responsible for
running diversity education initiatives, facilitating the newly redesigned Racial Equity Institute, managing the
Calling All Colors Program, supervising the Migrant Mentoring Program and teaching Spanish classes. She
joined the Diversity Alliance in 2008 following her work with nonprofit organizations in Nicaragua and with
migrant and seasonal farm workers in the US.
Salguera has a B.A. in Sociology and Spanish from the University of Dayton.
She is originally from the lakeshore area and lives in Holland with her husband and their three-year-old son.

COMMUNICATIONS
What member of HASP once saw a UFO? What was going on in the back room of a photography studio in
Freeport, Long Island? Whose family grew marijuana as a cash crop on their farm? Inquiring minds will find
that out and much more in the 2013 HASP Review coming on June 4.
The deadline for new submissions for the 2013 HASP Review is/was April 1.
SERVICE
Tulip Time Trolley Guides Needed
We need more Tulip Time Trolley Guides! The festival this year is Saturday, May 4th through Saturday, May
11th. Guides attend a training session in mid April. The training includes materials and extensive scrip for
narrating the seventy five (75) minute tours. Guides are required to wear a Dutch costume provided by the Tulip
Time festival office if they do not have one of their own.
In mid February, guides are sent a trolley schedule to mark the times they are available. A guide may wish to be
available one day or all eight days. How many runs do you want? Two? Four? Six? Would you like to do
mornings or afternoons? In effect, you determine your own schedule. Snowbirds are welcome. We will contact
you in the south.
Sound interesting? It is more than interesting. IT IS FUN !!!
If interested, please contact Larry Lynn at 399-0799 or oldrun@aol.com.
Last year’s guides returning for 2013 need not reply.

HASP 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
2013 will be HASP’s 25th Anniversary! We are starting our monthly program meetings this year 10 minutes
earlier to provide us with time to remember our early beginnings. Below is the HASP Review history presented
by Jack Hyde at our March 2013 monthly program:
HASP Review
In this very room, in every occupied chair is a treasure trove of interests, experiences, memories and talents. It
is the mission of HASP to share those with one another through friendships, classes and events. It is the mission
of HASP Review to offer opportunity to share those with others through our annual anthology of prose, poetry
and artistic expression.
The first issue of HASP Review was conceived by Bill Bloemendaal who mentored editor, Trudy VanderHill to
its publication. It was a smaller format than what we have now. The first article of the first issue was by
member, Laura Ver Plank who, through her contribution set a tone for all future issues with “Please Don’t Tell
Me What Your Painting Says”. In other words, art is in the eye of the beholder. Those were words of wisdom
for all who would follow. The last page of that first issue was a profile of HASP and contained an appeal for
the funding of future issues. From those early years to more recent times, debate has involved whether or not
HASP Review should be more literary in nature or should it be a reflection of our entire membership? It has
remained accessible for the entire membership in accordance with the founding principles of HASP.
And now, in the first quarter-century of HASP, we’ll soon have our twenty-second consecutive issue of this
anthology preserving and sharing the musings, poetry and artwork of our considerably talented membership.
What has the publication of HASP Review accomplished over the years?
It has provided opportunity:
•
For creative thought “What can I write about? What can I draw?”
•
To give voice to members.
•
To preserve that voice – looking back through past issues we find artwork
from hands and words from voices that have been stilled. HASP Review is
an ever-growing legacy of the richness of our membership.
•
For readers to engage with those shared thoughts and adventures and to
connect with one another.
•
For members to be involved in its production as writers, poets, artists and editors.
•
For Lifelong Learning and sharing – the founding fundamental principles of
HASP.
For the bean counters among us, here are a few numbers that summarize involvement in HASP Review:
In the 22 years of the existence of this publication, it has been supported by:
•
3+ executive directors (including leadership before the position existed)
•
70+ editors
•
20+ artists
•
210+ writers and poets
6
•
And more than a few interested Readers in the greater HASP Community
It is the vision of HASP Review to continue to preserve the legacy of HASP members through this developing
archive and to continue to promote our goals of lifelong learning and sharing.
