“Toward a More Inclusive Hope College: Playing Offense and Defense in the
Phelps Scholars Program” – Charles Green
The mission of Hope College, in part, is “to educate students for lives of leadership and service in a global
society.” The Phelps Scholars Program is an academic and residential opportunity for a culturally diverse group
of first-year students to prepare for that kind of life. Toward that end, we “play offense” by developing the
cultural competence of all of our students as they learn about culture, the realities of social control, and tools for
building community across difference. We “play defense,” too, by providing active support for students often
marginalized at Hope, and helping the college community understand the continuing effects of racism and the
on-going challenges of the 21st century. And while we’re at it, we (mostly) have a good time together.
Four Hope students: Jordan Hill, Liping Wang, Sherri Smith, and Jesus Romero will be joining Dr. Green for
his presentation.
Charles (Chuck) Green is a social psychologist (Ph.D., University of Florida, ’83) who studies race and culture
in the U.S. During his 30 years at Hope College, he has taught in the psychology department, served as director
of the Carl Frost Center for Social Science Research, and, since 1998, led the Phelps Scholars Program. His
wife, Fonda, is the director of Hope’s Children’s After-School Achievement Program (CASA). They have three
adult children, and worship at New Community Fourth Reformed Church in Holland.
Parking in Pillar Church lot will not be available on this day due to Tulip Time and we expect parking to
be difficult. Please carpool as much as possible.
MONTHLY MEETING PARKING:
Lot Z – behind Anderson-Werkman building is reserved for HASP members (marked
with orange cones), there are some available spaces in Lot U (for Haworth guests, behind the Kepple House by Dykstra Hall), street
parking where available, and the lot behind New Holland Brewery and 84 East where available. The newer downtown parking ramp
is also a great option! If you live at Freedom Village, please consider taking their bus over.

Sympathy…
Our sympathy is expressed to the friends and family of William Price. William died on March 7, 2013, and was
a member of HASP since August 2009 following a career in national sales and marketing. William’s wife Abby
is a HASP member also.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Janet Kramer and the family and friends of Richard (Dick) Harris, HASP
member, who passed away on March 25, 2013. Dick was a retired salesman and joined HASP in 1999. He
served HASP as the chair of Special Events, Board of Directors, and Long Range Planning Committee member.
Special note from the Membership Committee and the office:
It is our practice to remember members who have died during the year at our Annual Business Meeting and
Luncheon in June. As our membership grows, it becomes more and more difficult to know of deaths if we have
not been notified by family. Please remember to inform the HASP office if you know of the passing of any
HASP members. Thank you for your help!
HASP New Member Orientation

HASP 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
2013 is HASP’s 25th Anniversary! We are starting our monthly program meetings this year 10 minutes earlier to
provide us with time to remember our early beginnings. Below is the history of HASP Special Events written
by Eileen Nordstrom:
SPECIAL EVENTS
The Special Events committee was formed to plan and administer special social, cultural, educational and
recreational events to enhance opportunities for meaningful friendships among members. The first social event
was held October 27, 1988. The following is from the second HASP News Bulletin:
The idea of a dinner-theatre social evening for members
and their spouses or special friends was so warmly endorsed
that a Social Committee, consisting of Evelyn Smallegan and
Margaret Steffens, has proceeded with plans. So, reserve the
night of October 27 (Thursday) to take your best companion
on a nostalgic (for our generation) trip to Hope College for:
Dinner: 6:00 p.m. - Maas Auditorium
Theatre: 8:00 p.m. - “The 1940’s Radio Hour” – a musical
Price:
$14.00 per person
What a bargain! 62 members and spouses attended. Obviously, the event was a “winner” as dinner and theatre
has continued over our 25 years. The committee has offered opportunities to attend plays performed during
Hope’s Summer Repertory Theatre season as well as student works during the academic year.
There are other events that have been offered year after year. Among those are trips to The Shaw Festival at
Niagara on the Lake and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival as well as many trips to the Chicago area. Other
trips have been one-timers. The trip to Springfield to view “all things Lincoln”, the four-day, three-night trip
that included a leisurely Mississippi riverboat cruise with a stop at Cantigny Gardens/Robert McCormick
Mansion on the way home and the trip across Lake Michigan on the Badger with an overnight in Door County,
Wisconsin are examples of these.
The Special Events committee has worked hard to plan relaxed times for members to get to know each other
better and, perhaps, form lasting friendships. Before the membership grew so large, luncheons were planned in
the Kletz following regular meetings, a tradition some members continue on their own. A thank you note from
participants on a four day, three night trip to the Upper Peninsula illustrates the camaraderie we hope will occur.
“We can’t even imagine having more fun on a HASP adventure than we did last week. Coming on this trip only
knowing two people, then returning to have 34 new friends is amazing.”
Over the 25 years, a wide variety of events have been offered, some hugely successful, some less so. Back in
1989, Dr. Bill Arendshorst led a very successful birdwalk. The next year he expressed regret when, after 40
plus members attended the Pops Concert in Grand Rapids, only 15, plus “Bunko” (Norm Japinga) the bus
driver, experienced the Kent County Waste-to-Energy excursion. Just goes to show we can’t please everyone
all the time.
5
During the 1999 – 2000 year three bike trips were planned. The first traveled the bike path from New Era to
Hart with lunch in New Era and dessert in Hart. Must have been too much for the group, as later that year the
“Bike – Eat – Shop Triathlon” was cancelled.
There have been years when the committee stretched its boundaries. In 1994 a two-week study tour to Mexico
was offered. Fifteen members responded. A seven-day Caribbean Cruise, “World of the Mayas,” followed in
1995. Then, in 2000, Bill and Nella Kennedy led a ten-day trip to the Netherlands.
Trips have been many and varied. A trip to Interlochen was discussed by the committee in 1992 as a possible
destination. It took a while, but was finally offered in 2008. In 1990 there was talk of a trip to the Upper
Peninsula. That trip was accomplished in 2008. Interestingly, both those trips had a serendipitous moment.
The day following Interlochen’s visit we were touring Black Star Farms’ Winery, when a man appeared at the
top of a vineyard hill. Much to the surprise and delight of the group, he picked up an alpine horn and proceeded
to play for some time. The special moment on the Upper Peninsula trip came as “Bunko” drove over the
Mackinaw Bridge. Looking down we viewed the spectacular sight of numerous sailboats, pregnant spinnakers
billowing, nearing the end of the Chicago to Mackinaw Race – a sight long to be remembered.
Something new last year was HASP’s first “Take a Grandchild” trip. The inter-generational emphasis was
special as grandparents and grandchildren visited the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum and the U.S.
Coast Guard Station, all in Grand Haven. There was also a kite building and demonstration session.
Because of HASP’s emphasis on learning, there is often a HASP class offered prior to a trip. Being exposed to
background information about the destination of the trip or the performance to be attended greatly enhances the
experience.
The Special Events Committee makes every effort to offer a balance of one-day and overnight trips or events.
Also, an attempt is made to include inexpensive offerings. Local day trips like industry tours, tours of Ottawa
County Parks, The Calvin Series shown at Christ Memorial Church, historic Holland church tours, Art Prize
visits and trips to Meijer Gardens accomplish this.
The committee encourages members to sign up for a trip, tour or performance. They have a wonderful time
planning. Sometimes whoever is doing the planning for an event gets to experience it twice, once to do a runthrough and then to lead the group. You may want to put your name on a list for future membership on the
committee.
As I was reading reports from all the years and also thinking about all the other opportunities HASP offers, I
came to the conclusion that HASP itself is a SPECIAL EVENT.
