First, we will learn about a wonderful children’s initiative called Kids Healing Kids, a volunteer choir made up of children in the third, fourth and fifth grades from various West Ottawa Public Schools. Bobbi Kearns, a music teacher in the West Ottawa Public Schools will tell her story of creating a volunteer organization of children with the goal of encouraging every sick child in the world. This journey of faith changed her life and the lives of the members and their families. Kids Healing Kids has received many awards including a Points of Light Citation from President Clinton, the Governor's Exemplary Youth Award from Governor Engler, The Take a Bigger Role Award with ceremonies in Washington D.C., The Communicator Award for film and the Herman W. Coleman Human Relations Award from the Michigan Education Association. Bobbi has also been a speaker at State and International conferences on community service. She also was the closing presenter in Oxford, England for a week long conference on quality education. The next phase of our December meeting will involve listening to a hand bell choir. The Tintinnabulation Ringers of First United Methodist Church of Holland was formed as a chime choir for retirees in the 1990s. The group eventually moved on to hand bells and plays anthems for worship services at the church. Occasionally the ensemble of ten members will play at places such as Appledorn and Warm Friend. The ensemble plays 3 octaves of hand bells plus choir chimes. David Newton, the Worship Arts Director for the church, has been directing the Tintinnabulation Ringers for nine years. The program will include Christmas and Sacred selections. The last portion of our program involves each of you as we enjoy some of our favorite holiday tunes in a HASP singalong. HASP member Marilyn Chamberlain will lead us in song while Joan Conway will provide the piano accompaniment. This should provide the perfect beginning to our Christmas season and we look forward to enjoying the fine voices of our HASP membership. SERVICE An Update on the Baggie Books Program at two local elementaries… Baggie Books is a reading program set up by Melinda Mendels, an academic coach at Glerum and Woodside Elementary Schools in the West Ottawa School District. The students, kindergarten through fifth grade, read an appropriate leveled book each school night with a family member and each day at school with a volunteer. The success of the program at Glerum last year as measured by test scores was outstanding. On November 25th, Baggie Books will begin at Woodside. Many Hasp members are working as volunteers once a week. Twenty nine out of the 46 volunteers are HASP members. Kudos to HASP for supporting this educational success! Melinda Mendels will present a HASP course on Monday morning, January 13. She will detail the program using statistics, research and videos of children and teachers involved in the program. If you would like to volunteer, contact Melinda at mendelsm@westottawa.net. Many more volunteers are needed at Woodside Elementary School located at 2591 North Division Avenue. This is the second month for that to take effect. It is our hope that we got them all correct, sometimes we were unsure whether one spouse wanted email and one hard copy, so if you are not receiving it the way you would like to, please notify Amy in the office, 395.7919 or berarducci@hope.edu. The HASP office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday Wednesday, November 27 – Friday, November 29th. We will reopen on Monday, January 6th. New signage for the Hope parking lots is being installed. HASP members are able to park in lots labeled ‘F’ for Faculty/Staff. Go to hope.edu/hasp and click on the link HASP Anniversary Photo Gallery at the bottom of the page. Winter weather…if Holland Public Schools are CLOSED due to weather, HASP courses are CANCELLED.
