For Good. For Ever. – What “good” does the Community Foundation do and why does “forever” matter?
Holland-Zeeland Community Foundation; Mike Goorhouse
The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area (CFHZ) has grown significantly in size and influence
over the last 25 years, all while operating under the tagline of “For Good. For Ever.” This presentation explains
what “good” the Community Foundation does and analyzes why “forever” matters by exploring three main
topics: 1. A history of the key moments that propelled CFHZ from its beginnings in 1951 to present-day. 2. An
explanation of the two key roles played by CFHZ: building a permanent community endowment and helping
donors achieve their charitable goals. 3. Examples of how CFHZ stewards our Community’s Endowment to
positively impact the Holland/Zeeland area.
Mike Goorhouse is President/CEO of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area (CFHZ). Mike’s
involvement with CFHZ goes back 14 years to when he served on the Youth Advisory Committee. He has since
spent his entire career in philanthropy including working with numerous private foundations and community
foundations while at the Council of Michigan Foundations prior to joining the CFHZ staff in 2012. Mike has
been named one of the top 40 business leaders under the age of 40 by the Grand Rapids Business Journal and
one of the nation’s top 30 civic leaders under the age of 30 by the National Conference on Citizenship. Mike
holds a Master’s of Public Administration in Nonprofit Management from GVSU as well as a Bachelor’s degree
in Secondary Education from Calvin College. He is a Certified Gift Planning Associate (CGPA) and a Certified
Fund Raising Manager (CFRM). Mike has served on many nonprofit boards including Kids’ Food Basket,
Learning to Give and the Association for a More Just Society.

COMMUNICATIONS
Communications Chair: Lorelle Eberly, jakelorelle@sbcglobal.net
Last month we suggested that you share your experiences or memories of the Thanksgiving and Christmas
holidays with your friends and colleagues at HASP by submitting your writings or drawings for the 2015 HASP
Review. Stories of other seasons, travels, unusual events, thoughts, poems or fiction also make wonderful
reading!
We are now ready to edit and prepare your submissions for the Review format. We just need you to get them to
the HASP office. You may bring (or mail) a 'hard' copy to the HASP office at 100 East 8th Street, Suite 270,
Holland, Michigan 49423; leave it in the Communications folder in the hallway between the HASP classroom
and the HASP office or email it to <hasp@hope.edu>.
Any one of the Committee members would be happy to answer your questions about length, format, style, 'good
beginnings,' ' closings,' or anything else to make the writing easy for you! The bottom line is We Want To Hear
From You.

Special Event Proposal - Lexington, Kentucky
BRING ON SPRING
For those interested in learning more about the April 14 – 17 trip to beautiful bluegrass country in and around
Lexington, Kentucky, two duplicate orientation sessions will offer help in making your decision and enable
your Special Events Committee to complete final arrangements. Video previews of places on the itinerary will
include: 1) Keeneland race track, 2) the Town Branch Distillery and Brewery, and life as lived in the 3) largest
of Shaker villages, Pleasant Hill. Keeneland is the highly esteemed site of the 2010 World Equestrian Games
and of the prestigious Breeders’ Cup races in October 2015, one of the two race seasons of the year.
Additional features of our visit will take us on walking tours of 4) Lexington’s historic district (homes of Mary
Todd Lincoln and the Hunt-Morgan families) and 5) tuition-free Berea College with a meal at their renowned 6)
Boone Tavern. We plan to meet and mingle with members of HASP’s counterparts at the U of Kentucky; hear
special speakers and guides; sample southern cooking at some interesting restaurants; stay at the Baymont Inn
and Suites motel with full breakfasts. Our grande finale as we return home will be a tour of world-famous
architecture-rich Columbus, Indiana and lunch at popular Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor. For a small city,
Columbus is a major repository of modern architecture with works by luminaries like Eero Saarinen, Cesar
Pelli, and Richard Meier. "National Geographic Traveler" magazine ranks Columbus the number one historic
U.S. destination. The American Institute of Architects gives it sixth place for architectural innovation and
design.
Approximately three weeks ahead of weather in our our northern latitudes, redbud and dogwood should be in
bloom. Young foals will be frolicking behind miles of picturesque white fences and stone walls. We will
experience the excitement of early spring race season which some say surpasses that of the Kentucky Derby.
We hope you will want to participate.
Costs have been revised downward a little to total $400 pp (double occupancy) and $550 pp (single occupancy).
Dates and places for the two orientation sessions are:
4
Tuesday, January 6 at 10:45 a.m. in the HASP classroom immediately following the monthly meeting
at Haworth
Monday, January 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the HASP classroom
If you are interested in the trip but unable to attend either meeting, please contact Peg VanGrouw , 392-9924, or
the HASP office, 395-7919. Final payment will be due by February 27.

In our renewal notices this year we had an opportunity for each member to check a box indication if you
would like to receive the bulletin via email. This is the first month for that to take effect. It is our hope
that we got them all correct. If you are not receiving the bulletin the way you would like to, please
notify Amy in the office, 395.7919, or berarducci@hope.edu.
The HASP office will be closed in conjunction with Hope College campus shutdown for Christmas and
New Years, Monday, December 22- Sunday, January 4th, reopening on Monday, January 5th.
Winter weather…if Holland Public Schools are CLOSED due to weather, HASP courses are
CANCELLED. If there are Holland Public School delays, HASP courses will continue as scheduled.
In the event of such a cancellation, we will put a notice on the office voice mail system, 616.395.7919
and send out a Constant Contact email message.
If you are interested in making a year end gift to the HASP Scholarship Fund or the HASP Endowment
Fund, please send your check to the HASP office and specify in the memo which one you are
contributing towards. The Hope business office will provide you with a tax receipt letter.
HASP Directories are for members only and not meant to be shared for solicitation purposes, thank you.
HASP MEMBERS
Dr. Susan Dunn and her nursing research student from the Department of Nursing at Hope are looking at a
possible connection between exercise and technology. They are asking if HASP members could participate by
answering a ten question survey. The survey will be e-mailed to members through our Constant Contact
communication sometime at the end of January or beginning February, 2015. Thanks for your assistance with
student research. …..Terri Holden, MSN, RN.
Second Semester Opportunities for Volunteering for Hope Classes
During the fall semester, 96 HASP members volunteered for 15 out of 18 requests. Thank you! Here are some
new opportunities for the spring semester. Please complete the form at the end of this article, drop it off at the
HASP office or contact Elliot Tanis, 396-2228 or, better yet, tanis@hope.edu.
1. Professor Susanna Childress (English) is interested in any writers (literary or creative writers vs.
commercial or genre) HASP has to talk to her Introduction to Creative Writing class about the process and
discipline of writing. The class meets Monday and Wednesday in the Dow Center, 204, 2:00-3:50.
2. The Hope College Model United Nations held their final event in 2014 so no volunteers are needed.
3. Professor James DeBoer (Music) is interested in any vocalist or instrumentalist who is willing to work with
Middle School or High School students one-to-one or in a small group at Holland Public Schools. Days and
times depend on your schedule and most anything can be worked out.
5
4. Professor Sarah Estelle (Economics, Management & Accounting) is teaching a class about the
consequences of government policy. One topic they cover is Social Security (SS). What has been your
experience with SS? Some possible topics are: (1) when to retire, (2) when to claim SS, (3) taxation of SS
benefits, (4) how the retiree sees working-aged people’s attitudes and expectations about SS as different than
their own when they were younger, because of the state of the program. More information is available. She
would like volunteers the last week of February and the class meets MWF at 11:00 a.m. in Graves Hall, room
206.
5. There will be 5 sections of Developmental Psychology so approximately 30 volunteers will be needed.
Details will be given next month. HASP members usually visit in late April.
6. Professor Kathy Winnett-Murray (Biology) would welcome HASP volunteers who have a background in
anything related to human health issues (broadly defined), who would be interested in providing a guest
lecture in Human Biology in Health and Disease, which meets MWF 9:30 - 10:20 am. The course is for nonscience majors; most students in the course are majors in Social Work and Physical Education. Lectures could
(a) focus on topics in human health that the speaker has a special interest in, or (b) be a personal account on
the speaker's career in a related field - a reflection on how you got there, highlights and challenges of what you
did in your work, and your hopes for the future of this field.
I am willing to volunteer (indicate the Professor/event).
