100 East 8th Street, Suite 270 Holland, MI 49423 (616) 395-7919 Number 318 Monthly Bulletin February 2015 Website: www.hope.edu/hasp Email: hasp@hope.edu Office Staff: Kim Mendels, Executive Director; Amy Berarducci, Administrative Assistant MONTHLY PROGRAM Date: Time: Place: Program: Monthly Program Chair: Peter Deede, hpdeede@aol.com Tuesday, February 3, 2015 9:00 AM refreshments, 9:30 AM program Haworth Inn & Conference Center Yes, There is a Symphony in Holland, Michigan; Kay Walvoord The Holland community has a long and proud tradition of coming together to enjoy well-performed music. Additionally, the Holland Symphony Orchestra (HSO) during its 25 years has evolved into a semi-professional orchestra providing outstanding concerts and performances the community has come to love and appreciate. HSO President and CEO Kay Walvoord will present highlights of how orchestral music has become an integral part of Holland’s cultural life. In addition, Walvoord will discuss the Orchestra’s successful accomplishments as well has her experience of combining both work and passion. Kay Walvoord has spent a lifetime engaged in music. The daughter of a concert soprano, Kay’s childhood in Muskegon was filled with attending orchestral concerts, taking private piano lessons, then learning the flute in school, which led to her specialty of double reeds – oboe and English horn. She majored in music at Albion College and received her master of music in oboe performance at the University of Illinois. After marriage, she lived the life of a freelance musician in Chicago while her husband Doug served his medical residency. Moving to Grand Haven and later to Holland, Kay played in the Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Holland symphonies. Always a champion of music, orchestral management opportunities presented themselves, and Kay helped to start the Holland Area Youth Orchestra in 1988 followed soon after by the Holland Symphony Orchestra in 1990. Managing the youth orchestra and a family with four children (all of whom are musicians), Walvoord left the HSO Board for a few years returning as chair of the board in 1996. She became its first executive director in 2001. Kay Walvoord now holds the position of President & CEO of the HSO. Applications are processed in the HASP office as they are received. The membership committee receives the application on the 10th of each month. We review them, write the bulletin biographies, prepare nametags, send welcome emails to the new members and contact mentors to let them know the person they have sponsored will be introduced at the next meeting. Applications received after the 10th of the month are held until the following month. This streamlines paperwork for the office and the committee. As a mentor, the person you are sponsoring will NOT be introduced until you have received a letter from the committee. However, once the new member receives the HASP welcome packet from the office, they may attend all monthly meetings and may sign up for classes and special events. Ushers for Holland Symphony Concerts Needed The Holland Symphony performs for area 5th grade students every year. Ushers are needed to assist at these concerts. Performances will be held at the Zeeland East auditorium on January 27, 2015, from 8:30 to noon and 3 in Holland at Central Wesleyan on February 17, 2015, from 8:30 to noon. Please contact HASP member, Myra Karachy 616.796.0067, or myrakarachy@tds.net, if you are available to help. Tulip Time Trolley Guides Needed As we look forward to spring, consider becoming a Tulip Time Trolley Guide. For over twenty three years HASP has provided the majority of trolley guides during the festival. Guides attend a half day training session in the middle of April. The training includes materials and extensive script for narrating the seventy five (75) minute tours. Guides are required to wear a Dutch costume provided by Tulip Time if they do not have one of their own. A guide will need to be available two different days or more during the eight day festival. New guides are normally scheduled for four tours during the festival. Although we appreciate your flexibility you can somewhat choose your own schedule. Snow birds are welcomed. We will contact you in the south. Festival week this year is from May 2nd through May 9th. For more information, please contact Larry Lynn at 399-0799 or oldrun09@gmail.com or David Tapley at 355-2538 or davidtapley@earthlink.net. On Being a Trolley Guide My first introduction to Trolley Guides was seeing Paul Kleinheksel on a trolley in his costume enjoying the interaction with the tourists. A couple of years later I found out that this was a HASP activity and that I might participate. I signed up. When I first saw the script, I was taken back but ploughed ahead. I have never looked back. My only regret the first year was that I had just four tours. The next year I got my own costume and requested more tours. Being a tour guide is educational. Where else would I have learned so much about Holland? It is rewarding to help the tourists enjoy their time in Holland. It is fun to tell the story, answer the questions, pose for pictures, and to be such an interactive part of the Tulip Time experience.
