“Co-Creating Work Experiences That Matter”
Hope College Center for Faithful Leadership; Steve Vanderveen
We were created to work. The college’s work should include helping students discern their gifts and calling,
prepare for work, and transition out. That is what the Center for Faithful Leadership (CFL) is about and why it
is seeking by 2025 to grow by 10-fold its co-curricular CFL Consulting and CFL Incubator programs. Learn
how we will transition from our current program as an academic minor. We will also be hearing from students
in the CFL Incubator program: how they are discerning their gifts and calling, preparing for work, and
transitioning from college by pursuing the development of their ideas.
Steve VanderVeen is Director of the Center for Faithful Leadership at Hope College and Professor of
Management. Steve earned his BA (English) from Calvin College in 1982, his MBA (Marketing) from Western
Michigan University in 1985, and his Ph.D. (Consumer Behavior) from the University of Illinois at Chicago in
1995. He joined Calvin College's faculty in 1989 and taught courses in management and marketing. He joined
Hope College in 2004. He became director of CFL in 2007. He currently leads the CFL Consulting and CFL
Incubator co-curricular programs, and teaches entrepreneurship and leadership courses.

The 2015 HASP Review
Picture this: an empty page waiting for your idea to be put on it.

Picture this: an empty page…
The HASP Review would like your fiction, memoir, art, poetry, random humor, and a signature.
If you haven't turned in something in a year or two, please do so before April Fool's Day. It will make the 2015
Review a work to be read over and over again just because you are in it.
SERVICE
Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun09@gmail.com
Second Semester Opportunities for Volunteering for Hope Classes
Thanks to all of you who volunteered for previous requests. There is still an opportunity for 3 volunteers for
Developmental Psychology plus 7 physicians and/or nurses for a Sociology class. Please contact Elliot Tanis,
396-2228 or, better yet, tanis@hope.edu if you can help.
Developmental Psychology is a class in which you share your insights with small groups of students as you
reflect on your adult years and respond to questions from the students. Still needed are two volunteers for
Professor Carrie Bredow’s class on Wednesday, April 22, 9:30-10:20, and one volunteer for Professor Elizabeth
Wetzler’s class on Thursday, April 23, 3:00-4:20.
Professor Temple Smith (Sociology) had three requests and two of those have been filled. We still need some
hospital administrators, physicians, and nurses to share experiences with her students. Her classes meet on
Friday, March 27, at 12, 1, and 2 p.m. in Van Zoeren Hall, Room 240. You may call her, (517) 214-2852, or email her, tdsmith@hope.edu, if you would like additional information

Tulip Time Trolley Guides Needed
As we look forward to spring, consider becoming a Tulip Time Trolley Guide. For over twenty three years
HASP has provided the majority of trolley guides during the festival. Guides attend a half day training session
in the middle of April. The training includes materials and extensive script for narrating the seventy five (75)
minute tours. Guides are required to wear a Dutch costume provided by Tulip Time if they do not have one of
their own.
A guide will need to be available two different days or more during the eight day festival. New guides are
normally scheduled for four tours during the festival. Although we appreciate your flexibility you can somewhat
choose your own schedule. Snow birds are welcomed. We will contact you in the south.
Festival week this year is from May 2nd through May 9th. For more information, please contact Larry Lynn at
399-0799 or oldrun09@gmail.com or David Tapley at 355-2538 or davidtapley@earthlink.net.
Holland Hospital- New Volunteer Opportunity
Their primary need at this time is in the Coffee Cove and Gift Shop. Both require the volunteer to use and be
comfortable with a touch screen Point of Sale system and cash handling. It is a simple system that is easy to use.
Duties for the Coffee Cove include brewing and serving coffee, selling various food items, and handling the
POS system. Duties for the Gift Shop include stocking and maintaining merchandise and using the POS system.
Please contact Larry Lynn at oldrun09@gmail.com or 399-0799 if interested.
