Victory over sin hts Moral action comes in two complete packages. Each package comes complete with a supreme end, plus the known means and actions to achieve that end. One package is labeled "love." The other is labeled "selfishness." The one is full obedience, the other is total disobedience. The two systems are mutually exclusive and antagonistic. There is no mixing, no crossover, no coexistence between them. "Virtue consists in willing every good according to its perceived relative value, and...nothing short of this is virtue.... To talk, therefore, of a virtue...right in kind but deficient in degree is to talk sheer nonsense. It is the same absurdity as to talk of sinful holiness, an unjust justice, a wrong rightness, an impure purity, an imperfect perfection, a disobedient obedience." Mt 22:37 & 39 Our whole moral obligation is to love God supremely and our neighbor as ourselves with all the light we have and can obtain. God requires nothing more than this; He can require no less. We can do no more; we can do no less and be Christians. * It is that simple. "But," someone might ask, "can my heart be right with God when I feel all these bad desires and emotions?" Finney comments regarding the Christian-"Emotions contrary to his intentions may, by circumstances beyond his control, be brought to exist in his mind; yet, by willing to divert the attention from the objects that produce them, they can ordinarily be banished. If this is done as soon as...it can be, there is no sin. If it is not done as soon as...it can be,...the intention is not what it ought to be." What must we do? ☼ We must pay close attention to our spiritual condition. ☼Deliverance from sin is impossible unless we are willing to live a life in communication with God. d. What must we do? ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ Ephesians 5:15-16 1 Timothy 4:16 Hebrews 2:1 1 Peter 1:13 Jude 20,21 e. How must we do it? We must build a habit of looking in faith to Jesus, our heavenly Lord and Savior. e. How must we do it? We must act. We must instantly choose to reject the temptation to exalt ourselves in selfsupremacy as soon as we are hit with the evil suggestions or temptations. e. How must we do it? The Gospel promises that when we do this, the indwelling Holy Spirit releases His energizing power within us in victory. The grace of God brings it. “Sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace.” Romans 6:14 f. When must we do it? Instantly. Before our emotions increase the strength of the temptation. The way out comes early sometimes. f. When must we do it? Put on the Lord Jesus (Ro 13:14) Envelop ourselves in the presence of God through worship and thanksgiving. We can not expect spiritual victory when Victory in Jesus “As we are beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, (we) are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” -2Co.3:18 Victory in Jesus It works because we are captivated by something so much better than our selfish gratification. Like Jesus: Hebrews 12:2 Victory in Jesus When we want deliverance enough to arouse ourselves to seek the face of God in order to get whatever we need, with great joy God meets us and grants our request. What does Paul say? What does Paul say? “Present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead.” Ro. 6:13 and “Present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification” .Ro.6:19 The word, present, is a command for instantaneous, sudden, dynamic action. What does Paul say? When temptation comes redirect your thoughts to worship. The temptation gets upstaged. What does Paul say? “Present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice” Ro.12:1 “lay aside the old self” Ep. 4:22 “and put on the new self.” Ep.4:24 Paul wrote these using a Greek form that calls for instantaneous actions, that we repeat whenever we need What does Paul say? Victory is Not Optional For Christians Romans 8:13 “If you are living according to the flesh, you must die. If by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you live.” Keywill ingredients: 1. You 2. by the Spirit The Holy Spirit is like a power steering unit It supplies the extra force to turn the wheels of a massive machine. God does not call upon us to struggle against temptation in our own strength. Sin is defeated by contrast We are never tempted to put our hand in a pile of cow manure. It is because we are never tempted to do something we hate. We sin because we love sin. Sin is defeated by contrast Victory means we have taken time to see the true awfulness of sin. It destroys all that is morally beautiful and good in life. We see sin’s stupidity, and total worthlessness. We turn from sin when we view the true moral worth of God just as surely as we let go of a rotten egg that we may reach out and grasp a dazzling diamond refracting the multi-colored beams of the sun.
