OUR OWL NEWS September 19, 2014 Hello! Hope all has gone well for you this past week! We have been having a pretty good week. The students were tested on their reading levels for our guided reading stations. We also worked on actually being in small groups and working at different stations in the room. We are still working on transition time for that, but they will get better with practice! For math we started to learn place value to the hundred thousandths place. Our scholars really liked playing the little place value game that we did on Thursday! For science the students learned about the scientific method and later in the week we did an experiment to practice it. We continued our community social studies unit and talk about ways in which we can improve our community. Here is a look at what we will be doing next week: Reading- we will begin working in our guided reading groups. We will also add two to three new stations for the students to utilize during this time. We will continue to work on learning different parts of speech for our main lesson time. Math- we will continue to go over place value. We will be covering values one through one-hundred thousand. We will also we working on reading numbers and using expanded notation. Science- we will be starting our solar system unit. We will be covering the basic 8 planets, 2 dwarf planets, and other various objects and concepts that have to do with space! This is going to be a very exciting unit as students at the end will be creating their own solar systems! Social Studies- we will continue our work with communities, particular talking about the government of a community. We will be learning about the three branches of the United States government and what each is suppose to do and how they are to function together. NEW THIS WEEK: We will be having weekly spelling tests. Attached is a list of the words that will be on this weeks spelling test. Please start practicing now with your students so that they can do their best on Friday’s test!!!! SHOUT OUTS: I am pleased to announce that we have had one student make it all the way up our behavior chart to P.R.I.D.E. Super Star!! Way to go Isiah! He is the first student to do this in our class! *Hey students keep up the good work because next week you could see your name in the Shout Out section* Please continue to go over the rules with your child. We are still having a problem following the rules. The more you, parents, are involved, THE BETTER!!! You can never remind your scholar enough of what they job is at school. Also, please be sure that your child is doing their homework packet, AS WELL AS reading 10-15 minutes a night. Their homework packet should be signed each night in the reading done box with how much they read and your initials. If this is not done, students will lose points!! So please, please, please, make sure this gets done. As always, call or email if you have any questions! Hope you have a great weekend! - Ms. Sargent
