Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Needs NEEDS – a lack of something required or desired. Needs motivate us to act! Abraham Maslow defined a Hierarchy of Human Needs Lower needs must be met first Physiological Needs Necessary for life Food, water, oxygen, sleep Protection from extreme temperatures Elimination Sensory Needs Hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting, mental stimulation Motor Needs If muscles aren't stimulated, they will atrophy Safety/Security The need to be free from anxiety and fear Secure in the environment Need for order and routine Love and Affection Social acceptance Friendship To be loved Need to belong and relate to others Sexuality feelings/attitudes toward a person's own masculine or feminine nature Ability to give and receive love and affection Reproductive capabilities Esteem Feeling important and worthwhile Respect, approval and appreciation Engagement in activities that bring achievement, success and recognition Growth of self-confidence Self-Actualization Obtaining our full potential Becoming confident, eager to express beliefs Willing to reach out to others to help them Review What are the five steps in Maslow’s hierarchy??? Which one comes first? Which one is last? How do we meet our needs? Direct methods Hard work Setting realistic goals Cooperation Evaluating what works or doesn't work effectively How do we meet our needs cont’d? Indirect methods (Defense Mechanisms) Unhealthy when used too often, but sometimes allows us to cope! Suppression Denial Keeps information out of conscious awareness Refusal to accept reality Projection Projecting your thoughts, feelings, and/or emotions onto someone/something else Defense Mechanisms (cont) Rationalization Making excuses Compensation Behaving as though a person has two separate sets of values Ex: An honest man who cheats on his taxes Stress Reactions Develop when defense mechanisms are inadequate Chronic complaining and demanding behavior Agitation with manipulative behavior Restlessness Sleeplessness Depression Withdrawal To meet the needs of others… Personalized healthcare focuses on the patient and meeting their needs and expectations Challenges in Healthcare Meet patient's needs to the best of your ability (Example - not all patients will get better but we can usually help them feel better) Set standards of excellence for yourself (Ex - career goals, read the literature, stay up to date, etc…) Let your conscience be your guide (if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t the right thing to do) Giving anything less than 100 % is unacceptable (100% effort is possible, 100% success is not) Responsibilities Take advantage of every opportunity to learn and develop skills Set standards for your performance Is 70 % good enough? Establish good study habits Relate learning to past experiences Measure each achievement in terms of progress toward your career goal Be honest with yourself and take responsibility for your actions ACTIVITY! • Draw Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in your notebook • Make sure to label each section!
