Underline or italicize titles of books, magazines, and scholarly journals (consult your professor for preference.) Enclose title of articles, essays, poems, and short stories in quotation marks. Indent 5 spaces or ½" on all but the first line of each entry. Double-space throughout. Use a shortened form of the publisher's name: "New York: Morrow, 2008" rather than William Morrow & Company, 2008. For pages that are not consecutive, such as newspapers, use a plus sign: "192+." If you have only the starting page number of an article's original print publication, give the number followed by a hyphen, a space and a period: "192- ." Make sure there is only one space after punctuation. When listing an online source originally printed in a book, journal, or other printed format, use the general guidelines you would use to cite the printed form, followed by the online citation. Articles from library subscription services [databases] are cited just like the print version with the addition of the name of the database underlined, the name of the service, the library, the date of access, and URL if known. Alphabetize entries by author. If no author is given, begin with the title. Parenthetical Documentation All sources cited in the text should be listed in the Works Cited. Use the first part of your citation for parenthetical documentation. Usually, that will be the author or authors' last names. Follow with the page number. (Brown and Proper 17). Use as little information as possible while making a unique identification. If there are two books by the same author, you must include part of the title. (Allison, Whatever 97). The author's name may be included in the text and only the page numbers in parenthesis. "As Allison asserts (97), the..." Many instructors prefer this method. Be sure to check. If you have no page numbers, it usually flows better to include the reference in the text. "According to Allison, the..." According to Hitler’s Mien Kampf, could the ‘Final Solution’ have been predicted? is better than What does Mien Kampf say about the Jews? How vital was the Hitler Youth to the German war effort from 1942 to 1945? is better than What role did the Hitler Youth play in the German war effort? What insights into the art of urban warfare did the Red Army gain from its victory at Stalingrad? is better outcome of WWII? than What was the effect of the Battle of Stalingrad on the Account for the high popularity of Swing music in Western youth culture in the 1920s and 30s is better than What was the affect of Swing music? 15 Appendix D Sample Theses During both the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare, the mutual fear of being denounced by casual associates: neighbors, co workers, friends and even family, seriously hindered people’s ability to resist persecution, while at the same time, even encouraged people to submit false accusations against their peers. is better than. Mutual fear played a major role in the Salem witch trials and the Red Scare. By analyzing the contents of Mien Kampf, we can see that a whole sale extermination of the Jews of Europe was not made explicitly clear. Instead, the ‘Final Solution’ was a result of a combination of circumstances and increased pressures brought on the Nazi state as a result of an escalation of WWII into ‘total war’ by 1942. is better than. Mien Kampf tells us that Hitler didn’t like Jews and that’s why he killed so many. On the home front, the Hitler Youth were the most efficient, vital, and cohesive unit in the absence of so many adult workers serving on the combat front. They played a crucial role in the auxiliary and support units of the German Army. is better than. The Hitler Youth operated anti aircraft artillery which freed thousands of combat troops for the war effort. Of the numerous strategic, economic, and political gains made by the Red Army at Stalingrad, the most significant were, the destruction of the myth of Nazi invincibility, the denial of the German war machine’s access to the valuable oil fields of the Caucuses, and the exposure of Army Group South’s southern flank and subsequent general withdraw of Army Group South. is better than The Battle of Stalingrad turned the tide of the war. The 1st World War had seriously eroded the faith that young people had in their leaders. The seeming lack of order, timing and tradition found in swing music, represented both an artistic rejection of the old guard, as well as, a popular form of subtle protest to the old world establishment. is better than. Many young people liked swing music because it seemed to be the only form of fun in an otherwise boring society. Appendix E 16 Sample Approaches Your approach can take on the form of a combination of the following strategies: - using primary and secondary sources in order to establish and analyze varying interpretations (of your topic) - analyzing sources in order to explain changing views over time of particular happenings or developments. - collecting and analyzing written and oral data from family and other contacts to help explain past happenings, perhaps leading to a comparison of local and national developments. - using all available sources to answer the question posed. ALSO… the following are samples of actual approaches used in relation to a particular topic. 1) Title: Different interpretations of the Salem witch trials Research Question: Which theory best explains the Salem witch trials? Approach: Background reading is undertaken to enable identification and explanation of two dominant theories as to why the trials took place. The values of the two theories are assessed using data obtained about the accused and the accusers. 2) Title: Changing views of the Cuban missile crisis Research Question: How and why have explanations of the Cuban missile crisis changed since 1962? Approach: General reading for historical introduction and note taking. The views of a number of historians are summarized in order to understand, categorize and evaluate selected explanations of the 1962 missile crisis in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
