Español 1 Classroom Expectations and Procedures Señora Medina Room 211 Vanessa.medina@husd.org (480) 279-8500 After school tutoring: *Tuesdays by appointment only About Me: I grew up in Mesa, Arizona and graduated in the top 2% of my class at Westwood High School. I graduated from Arizona State University in 2010 and have been teaching ever since. Even though I am of Hispanic descent the Spanish language was not passed down to me by my family. Like many of you my journey of learning Spanish began by taking courses in middle school. I also have a passion for traveling and trying new things. I have been to many places and plan to visit more destinations with my husband. I look forward to sharing my experiences from traveling to Spanish-speaking countries with the students. Parents: Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Email is the quickest way to reach me, and I generally return an email or phone call within 24 hours. Please be sure to check Synergy, the grade book system on a regular basis. You can access the system through the link to the left. Bienvenidos (Welcome) to Spanish 1. Bathroom breaks are not allowed the first 10 minutes of class nor during instructional time. In the event that you have to use the restroom and it is an appropriate time simply remove the bathroom pass from the wall (muchacho- boy/or muchacha- girl) then sign-out. When you return you must sign back in. Only one person is permitted at a time to use the restroom. If bathroom privileges are being abused further restrictions may be assigned. Instruction: During direct-instruction (teacher to students) everyone will remain in their seats and will listen and participate appropriately. Restroom use is not permitted during this time. Interactive Notebook: Students are required to bring a 100 page or bigger spiral notebook to class daily. This is where classwork, homework, notes, handouts, and vocabulary will be kept. On the left hand side will be student output and on the right side page will be teacher input. Care and upkeep of notebook is student responsibility, notebooks will be checked often, and notebooks must be legible. The table of contents can be found on my teacher page under interactive notebooks. Daily work/Practice: Each day in class you are expected to complete assignments in your interactive notebooks. You are also expected to check your work. When learning a language mistakes will occur. Another aspect of practice is for you to learn from your mistakes. You must be correcting your mistakes when we go over assignments as a class. Homework/Preparation: Homework will be given daily and needs to be completed in the interactive notebook. Homework assignments can be found on my teacher page under calendar. Students are expected to spend at least thirty minutes every evening in order to complete their homework, study the vocabulary (verbalize the vocabulary/practice vocab daily) and review grammar concepts for the chapter. Vocabulary Study: As this is course is equivalent to a high school Spanish class expectations are high. You should be studying your vocabulary on a daily basis. There will be weekly quizzes and tests and your knowledge of vocabulary is vital in your success of acquiring the language. Sra. Medina’s Top Tips for Vocabulary Study: Study 5-8 new words a night. Visit my teacher page and under curriculum support click on the appropriate Quizlet (website that contains the chapter’s vocabulary) Go through the digital flash cards and click on the pronunciation and repeat the word after it is presented. Create paper flash cards and practice independently. – Write the English on one side and the Spanish on the other. Take it a step further and draw the picture on the Spanish side. On a separate sheet of paper write the words out over and over again and then quiz yourself at the end. Write a sentence in Spanish using the word. Teach the new words to a friend or family member. When appropriate label items with the Spanish vocabulary word to help practice each day. Go back and review the previous 5-8 words from the nights before. Play the games and quizzes on Quizlet to see your strengths and weaknesses. Absences: It is your responsibility to be on top of your make-up work. You must visit my teacher page and make-up all work that is posted on my teacher page for the day(s) you missed. It will be under class calendar on the specific day for your specific class. The class calendar is updated daily during my prep period. It will have all class notes and assignments. Do not come to class asking me what we did before checking the class calendar. If you have additional questions then come see me. Everything can be accessed digitally from the class calendar. Tardies: You are tardy if you arrive to class after the bell without a pass. Frequent tardies will result in Lunch Bunch along with parent contact!!! Excessive tardies will result in an office referral. This includes 0 hour students! Quizzes: There will be vocabulary quizzes each Friday in addition to grammar quizzes. Tests: Units last about three weeks. At the end of each unit students will take a speaking or writing exam and a comprehensive multiple choice test. Retaking/Redoing tests/assessments: You are permitted to redo or retake any graded assessment, excluding the final exams. Students may re-do assignments within 2 weeks of due date to receive full credit and by the end of the quarter. Students may not re-take assessments if they have missing assignments. A re-do/re-take form signed by the parent must be completed prior to re-do. This form can be accessed on my teacher page under the tab Retake Petition. After school tutoring: It is my expectation that you are studying vocabulary, working on classwork and completing homework daily. If you need more assistance you can set up a time with me after school on Tuesdays for additional practice. You must sign-up in advanced by writing your name on the sign-up sheet by 5th hour on Tuesday along with which area you need help in or which quiz/test you are retaking.
