1. Introduction :
The primary purpose of Department of Social Studies Education is to enhance the
specialties of teachers in politics, economics, sociology, cultural science, law and
teaching methodology for social studies. The department also aims to cultivate teachers
of secondary schools with comprehensive knowledge of social studies. The mission of
the department is to develop capable teachers who have the ability to research into
theory and practice in social studies education, to lecture on various topics in social
studies education, to contribute for revision and implementation of national curriculum,
and to make their leadership in schools.

This course aims to introduce the theoretical background of social studies education,
discuss issues of curriculum/instruction and evaluation of social studies education.
SSE6002 Seminar in political Education
This course aims to research and examine regarding concept, contents, methods and
practice of political education which influence on middle and high school students ’
political consciousness as well as political attitudes.
SSE6003 Seminar in Economics of Education
This course aims to understand the object and contents of economic education. It also
studies various methodologies of teaching and evaluation for economic education.

This course studies sociological theories and methodology required for sociological
research.

contemporary
sociological
theories,
social
scientific
methodology and sub-topics of sociology such as family, marriage, class, education etc.
will be discussed.
SSE6005 Law and society
This introductory course will help students to understand social norms including law.
Students will study the concepts, effects, ideals, and general principles of law as well as
the distinction between public and private law. They will also investigate various
attitudes toward law and law consciousness in terms of citizens’ capacity to comply
with law.
SSE6006 Special Topics in Culture Anthropology
Examine the change from the birth of humankind to the present, and helps the mutual
understanding between different cultures and races and overview of various types of
culture they created.
SSE7001 Special Topics in Korean Traditional Culture
The aim of this seminar should have an interest in the ethnic and culture by introducing
and understanding the study results to evaluate the meantime, in order to explore the
living system(traditional culture) that owns the nation.
SSE7002 Comparative Study of the Northeast Asia Culture
Social Studies Education-8
Find the characteristics of the three ethnic study the propagation of these compare to
the culture of Korea, China, and Japan.
SSE7003 Constitutional Law
This course is to provide future teachers of social studies with the basic structure of
constitutional law. Emphasis is on not the interpretation of specific articles, but the
basic principles of constitutional law, the development of the Korean constitution, the
Bill of Rights, and the frame of government.
SSE7004 Law-Related Education
Explores basic theories and important aspects of law-related education in social studies,
and other related topics of civic education. Important topics will include the history and
basic theories of law-related education in social studies; legal socialization theories;
strategies and assessment of law-related education.
SSE7005 Local Autonomy and Participation of Citizens
The object of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the overall
contents and characteristics of local government and methods of civic participation. It
will deal primarily with the significance, history, organization, jurisdiction, and power of
local governance and the issues of civic participation as the public participation
institution, activation of political movement, and human rights learning.

The task of this seminar is to compare to other cultures and to find the characteristics
of the people living in the propagation of these studies.

This course is to find directions for Korean political development by comparing and
analyzing with the political education of other countries.
SSE7008 Theories in Economic Education
This course explores fundamental theories and applications of economics through which
students can acquire the deeper understanding of economic education.

This course aims to follow up current trends in the social studies education, helps
students to design research paper in social studies education.
SSE7010 Topics in Traditional Village of Northeast Asia
Understand the methodology study on ethnic characteristics of folk housing in Korea,
China, Japan, Mongolia. Further research should be understood that the culture contact

The purpose of this course is to provide the basic legal concepts of human rights from
both constitutional law and international perspectives. Students will study the theory of

This course is to introduce various theories of state, government, and political
development beforehand to find similarities as well as differences by comparing and
analyzing with the politics of the foreign countries.

This course is to introduce the analyse approach to festivals of Northeast Asian
including the play culture, and to research the fieldwork methodology and analyse

This course is to understand the basic concept of politics in contemporary society to
examine practical theories of political science applicable for analysis on political
phenomenon including discussion on Korean political development associated with
current political situations.

Students need to develop skills and capabilities of international understanding in
globalized society. For this, it covers methods and contents of the theories of
international relations and global education.
SSE7035 Seminar in Social Studies Textbooks & Materials
This course helps students to understand essential conditions of class design, practice
class design and conduct teaching simulation, and apply classroom observations and
analysis methods in these processes.
SSE7036 Seminar in Teaching and Learning of Social Studies
This
course
aims
to
explain
different
conceptions
of
democratic
citizenship,
multiculturalism, and patriotism in the context of real-world society and schools and
create and explain social studies pedagogies that promote democratic citizenship.

This course analyzes social studies curriculum and textbooks, designs lesson plan, and

SSE7038 Qualitative Research Methods for Social Studies Education
This course aims to develop and deepen qualitative methodological skills useful for
researches of social studies education and sociology. In-depth interview, focus group
interview and other qualitative methods will be covered. It also covers research plan,
research design, conducting research and analyzing data. Through this workshop
students are expected to strengthen required skills and their capacity and capability for
their research projects.
SSE7039 Seminar on International Area Studies
This course aims to develop in-depth knowledge on international area studies with case
studies of selected regions (East Asia and Southeast Asia). Key issues such as
modernization and globalization, development and underdevelopment, social class,
changing labor relations and work, urbanization, and international migration will be
studied.
SSE7040 Seminar on Sociology of Migration
This course is designed to deepen sociological perspective and understanding of
international migration and immigration by covering recent theoretical developments on
sociology of migration including transnational migration. It focuses on recent theoretical
developments and empirical studies on sub-topics of migration studies such as diverse
migrant types, migrant groups and host society, transnational social space, migrant
