PROJECT: Autobiography
Students will divide into groups. Each group will be given a DVD of a Deaf person signing his
autobiography. Each group is to view thirty minutes of the DVD and translate what is seen into written
English. The project has been broken down into 10 minute pieces. Please see above for due dates. Only
one paper for each group may be submitted for grading. All papers must be typed AND double spaced.
Each group member is to maintain a list of new vocabulary words to be recorded in their individual
journals. In addition, a sign in sheet must be kept each time group members meet. The sheet must
include who is in attendance, the date and beginning/end times for each group member. Each group
member must sign the sheet each time the group meets. This is to be turned in with the typed
translations.
SCHEDULE:
January 9- Feb. 3 Translating from English into ASL.
Students will be placed in groups and given a passage to translate into ASL. Students will present their
ASL passages to the class. Instructions for the process of translation will be given in class.
Feb. 8-21 Prompts
Students will be given a prompt in written English, for example, “I believe the legal drinking age should
be _____ because ______.” Students will write a two-paragraph response, and then translate their
response into ASL. Students will sign their responses to the class.
ATTENDANCE: To earn course credit in the College of Arts and Sciences, a student must attend at
least 75% of all scheduled class meetings. Any student who does not meet this minimal standard will
automatically receive a grade of “F” in the course. Any University-related activity necessitating an
absence from class shall count as an absence when determining whether a student has attended the
required 75% of class meetings. Three tardies will count as one absence.
As you know from last semester, regular attendance is essential in this class. If you miss even a few
classes, you will find yourself struggling. Every day’s new information builds on and assumes
knowledge of information covered in class up to that point. I expect you to make class attendance a very
high priority, and I look forward to seeing you in class every day.
DEVICES: All use of cell phones, smart phones, and other mobile communication devices is prohibited
in class. This is an entirely visual class which requires you to be watching at all times. Any such
devices used during class will be kept for you at the front of the classroom until the end of class.
FINALLY … OUR CLASSROOM IS AN ALL-VISUAL, ASL ENVIRONMENT.
LEAVE YOUR VOICE OUTSIDE THE DOOR. NO TALKING, WHISPERING,
OR MOUTHING WORDS ALLOWED ONCE YOU ENTER THE CLASSROOM.
