1. Affluent
ADJ meaning wealthy; abundant; plentiful.
Ways It Is Often Used: Use this word to describe someone who is financially well off to the point that they are
now part of the upper middle class or above.
Sample Sentence: Jason isn’t just lucky enough to have gotten a one-time payment of a few thousand dollars;
he makes enough money all the time to be called affluent.
N meaning teasing or mocking in a good-natured, playful manner;
V meaning to engage in such playfulness.
Ways It Is Often Used: When you use banter as a NOUN, you are using it to describe the kind of conversation.
When you use banter as an ACTION VERB, you are using it as the action.
Sample Noun Sentence: Sierra’s type of banter, playing like she’s being a smart-aleck, might get her in trouble .
Sample Verb Sentence: Sierra banters with Mrs. Foley as if she’s being smart-mouthed.

Ways It Is Often Used: This is a way to say something is brief, NOT how tall someone is.
Sample Sentence: You should appreciate his brevity, or ability to get straight to the point.
N meaning the suggested, or implied, meaning of a word, not its strict literal meaning; an idea or
feeling associated with a word.
Ways It Is Often Used: This is the fancy word for that feeling of knowing what something means, but not being
able to say the exact dictionary definition. Connotation is the unofficial meaning of a word.
Sample Sentence: The dictionary definition of “crank” means a handle used in a turning motion to raise or
lower something; however, the connotation of “crank” can mean a type of illegal drug.

V meaning to decorate or adorn; to improve a story by adding details, even false ones .
Ways It Is Often Used: This is another way to say that you added details to something.
Sample Sentence: Jordan used glitter and scrapbook paper to embellish Kyle’s locker.
6. Imbibe
V meaning to drink; to drink in or absorb; to take in with the mind and keep (as in ideas or
principles).
Ways It Is Often Used: This is an old-fashioned way to say you drank something.
Sample Sentence: Lots of people imbibed way more alcohol than they should have at the party.
7. Nostalgic
ADJ meaning having a longing for things past.
Ways It Is Often Used: This is a great word to use when you are thinking about things you miss about the past.
Sample Sentence: Some of us at the reunion talked nostalgically about things we remembered from our days in
school together.
8. Novice
N meaning an inexperienced person; a beginner.
Ways It Is Often Used: Try remembering that a novice is a nicer way to say newbie.
Sample Sentence: It’s been so long since I golfed that I would be a novice if I ever go golfing again.
9. Reiterate
V meaning to restate; to repeat.
Ways It Is Often Used: This is just a slightly more formal way to say repeat.
Sample Sentence: Coach reiterated his main point about how to contain the other team’s offense.
10. Stipend
N meaning fixed or regular pay; a salary or allowance.
Ways It Is Often Used: This word is used to represent a certain payment that you receive for certain duties.
Sample Sentence: Teachers receive a stipend for coaching UIL academic events.
