Introduction to the Brain (Model Brain Study)
Please use the model brain to construct the following diagrams: a dorsal view (from the top), a
lateral view (from the side), a ventral view (from the bottom), a medial view (lengthwise on the
inside), and a coronal view (widthwise from the inside).
In each diagram, label only the following structures which are visible in each particular view:
1) Cerebral hemispheres
2) Lobes of the cerebrum (frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal)
3) Cerebellum
4) Hypothalamus
5) Pituitary gland
6) Medulla oblongata
7) Corpus callosum
8) Optic nerve
9) Optic chiasm
10) Optic tract
We will be starting dissections of mammalian brains next week. In preparation, please identify
the following structures and define their general functions. Bring these to class next week.
1) Olfactory bulb
2) Sulcus
3) Gyrus
4) Medial longitudinal fissure
5) Thalamus
6) Pineal gland
7) Hippocampus
8) Striatum
9) Amygdala
