This position reports directly to the Database Operations Team Manager. This position provides operational support of databases hosted in the EDC. The environment consists primarily of SQL Server instances running on virtual and physical infrastructure. Additional databases run on Oracle including an enterprise Oracle RAC solution. The incumbent: Confers with Commonwealth agencies on their database requirements. Installs RDBMS software. Performs backup and recovery and database tuning, replication, and clustering. Performs day-to-day database administration duties for all EDC supported databases instances. Evaluates new products and emerging technologies and determines how they can be used effectively. Establishes and administers data and database policies and ensures continued compliance with standards. Ensures agency database problems are resolved in a timely manner. Installs, upgrades, patches, and configures RDBMS software and related products. Troubleshoots and resolves very complex database and server problems. Creates, maintains, and modifies physical databases within the EDC, including the database storage structures and database objects ensuring that appropriate links exist and that keys are established to provide processing efficiency. Implements changes in database design and operation, which will maintain or improve upon the quality of services. Designs centralized and distributed database structures or system architecture consistent with EDC applications, operations, and networking goals and objectives. Establishes and defines database backup and recovery procedures by establishing the backup schedule and retention periods, monitoring backup processes and procedures, preparing scripts to recover databases from backup systems, and developing procedures for the reconstruction of lost or damaged data. Monitors system performance, assesses space utilization and growth, and recommends upgrades and enhancements to software and hardware to ensure optimal database performance based on current and future requirements. Performs database tuning analysis, recommendation and implementation. Creates and schedules database administration jobs using Integration Services and scripts. Sets up and maintains database replication procedures. Researches, evaluates, tests, and installs database software and perform database software conversions and migrations to new levels, vendors, or platforms while preserving data integrity. Makes capacity planning and server/software purchase recommendations Develops and establishes security standards and procedures for controlling and monitoring user access and for establishing and maintaining user passwords, roles, and profiles. Maintains and modifies specialized software and utilities and analyzes and resolves problem conditions attributed to database design or software, which may involve contacting vendor or internal technical support on software related problems. Interfaces with programming, applications development, distributed systems, operations, and operating systems personnel and users to maintain control of the configuration of the database structure, to establish database access techniques, to address database performance issues, and to resolve database problems. Reviews and approves data model designs developed by application developers. Performs problem resolution and root cause analysis along with recommending and implementing preventive techniques. Provides on call and/or emergency support to maintain operations as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned, to include those outlined in the CoG Plan when the Plan is activated. Responds to the designated alternate or secondary location when directed in response to a catastrophic incident.
