Sawara Bhattarai Professor Taylor English 1A STACC 9th may 2014 Importance of Immigration Reform to country and immigrants Will immigration reform benefit country and immigrants? President Obama announced an executive order on November 20, 2014 that offered temporary legal status to millions of immigrants who are illegally leaving in the US and the reform also stopped millions of people from being deported. There are still some complication to immigration reform. People have their own opinion toward the immigration reform, some may agree and some may disagree. The immigration reform will definitely help illegal immigrants because it will allow them to stay in the US without being deported and as a legal resident. Here I am writing about the importance of immigration reform to the immigrants and also the country which might help people to change their opinion toward the immigration reform. The family is very important to everyone but there are many immigrants family who are apart of them. They are not able to stay with their parents and children. All of us know the importance of family, how it feels to be away from mom. Many immigrant’s parents are living illegally in the US and they can be deported anytime and many of them are already been deported which has separated their family. The immigration reform helps to those parents whose children are permanent resident or citizen and if they have lived in US for 5 years. They will not be deported and can live in the US without any risk with their children. Immigration reform will also help the immigrant worker who have been in unfair and competitive work right now. There are millions of immigrants currently who are not paid fairly because they are illegal and they are also kicked out of the job if some else is found who will work in less salary than the one working. They are not being treated well and it is not unfair to those immigrant workers. This immigration reform will help them to get their right and not being exploited because of their illegal status. The immigration reform will help the immigrants in many ways. In the article, "Born and Raised in LA, Detained for Not Looking 'American" it explains about how a person was kept in jail and threatened for not looking like an American. Writer said he was born and raised in California but L.A. sheriffs detained him for not looking like an American. He was kept in jail for 14 hours, he could not prove them that he was American citizen so they threatened him to say that he was Mexican. They kept him in a cold cell and later he called his sister to bring the birth certificate. Only after seeing the birth certificate they let him free. This discrimination will not be done if the immigration reform will get passed. The immigrants will also be treated equally and get equal opportunity. Not only for immigrants, it will also help the country by improving the economy of the country. All the immigrants parents will be start to pay taxes which they are not doing now even though they are working and earning money. Since, they will start to pay taxes to the government, it will definitely help country’s economy. According to the research it said, “These actions to help reform our immigration system will strengthen our country, grow our economy by up to $210 billion in ten years, and could shrink the federal deficit by up to $25 billion over the next decade.” This shows that the economy of the country will be helped by the immigrants if this reform will be passed which will benefit the country. The immigration reform will also help the America’s security. Right now, there are many immigrants who are unknown to the government. They hide themselves because of being caught and being punished and so they take help of smugglers to enter the country which not good. The immigration reform will help the immigrant to enter with a visa but not with the smugglers. This will require every immigrant to go through a government process which help to check their background of the person and those immigrants will be separated who come to the US for crime or to harm with the immigrants who come to get a better life. This will help to improve the security of the country. People who does not support the immigration reform might say that it is not good for border security. Republicans also do not agree with the immigration reform and they had shown many other thing saying that will affect the country and are trying many thing to stop the immigration reform. They also might think that till will increase the number of democrats’ voter if this reform will be passed. People also say that only immigrants agree in this topic whereas other people do not agree on immigration reform. Some might also say that it will only help immigrants. But I have written in above paragraph how the immigration reform will help the America’s security. The reform will make immigrants to go through governmental process which will check the background of the immigrants and if they person with wrong intension would be found they will be punished or will be deported back. This shows it will protect the security of the country. I have done research and in only of the article I have found that 7 out of 10 Americans’ agree with the immigration reform. They think that immigration reform will help the immigrants as well as the country. 7 out of 10 people think the congress should pass the law on immigration reform. In the article, "Will Immigration Reform Create 11 Million New Democratic Voters?" it show that it will not increase the number of democrat voters. The writer explains us that this law will not make all 11 million illegal immigrants legalized. It is just a step toward getting citizenship. He also explains that all immigrants will not try for it may be because they are happy with their situation right now or by thinking that the law might be changed. He also talks about the states with immigrants and those states are already voting for democrats. The writer also says that many of the immigrants getting legalized are not the right age for voting. So, this article explains that this reform will not change the voting for democrats and republicans. The immigration reform is good for everyone. It is good for immigrants and the country both. SWOT Analysis of the Immigration Reform S- Strength W- Weakness • • Cost of healthcare may go up • 20 something state are against it Increases the number of educated immigrants • Helps the country’s economy • Re-apply every 3 years • Able to tax immigrants • Will not extend visas for immigrant • Creation of jobs in stem farm workers • Expand DACA • • Shield 4 million immigrants people from deportation O- Opportunity • Will not extend protection for DACA Republicans don’t quite agree T- Threats • Get Healthcare • • Better education leaves office • Apply for College and jobs • May loose importance • Equal opportunity • People may still get deported May not get passed before Obama So, our group SWOT analysis say that the strengths of the immigration reform are that it will increase the number of educated immigrants, this will also help the country’s economy to build up and tax can be collected from immigrants which country cannot collect now even they work and get paid. It will help to create job in STEM. This will also help to expand DACA and will protect 4 million immigrants from being deported. But there are also some weakness of this reform. The cost of healthcare may go up as it will increase the number of residents of the US. There are more than 20 states who doesn’t support the immigration reform. It should be re applied every 3 years and this does not extend the visas for migrants farm workers. This reform will also not extend protection for DACA people. The last thing is that Republicans don’t agree with it. Instead of that there are opportunity for immigrants people like they will get healthcare facilities, they can get better education, immigrants student can apply for college and better jobs and most important there will be equal opportunity for everyone. This reform still have some threats like it may not get passed before Obama leaves office and if that happed it may lose its importance because new president may not look after it or if he/she will not give more importance to it. And the last thing is that people may still get deported. So, I am writing about the importance of immigration reform to the immigrants and also the country which might help people to change their opinion toward the immigration reform. My essay talks about the benefits immigrants and country will get if the immigration reform will be passed. The illegal immigrants will be able to live with their children without the fear of being deported. The immigrant’s worker will get right and will be treated well in their job. Every immigrants will be treated equally and will get equal opportunity. They will get better facilities and better lifestyle. With immigrants the country will also get benefit from immigration reform. The economy of the country will grow if it will be passed, there will be better security in the country, and country will get educated immigrants students. I think the immigration reform helps everyone, it is important to country and immigrants so who don’t agree should think about it once again because it does not benefit one or two but it benefits millions of people. So, everyone should support the immigration reform. Work cited Diego, Rojas. "Born and Raised in LA, Detained for Not Looking 'American'" Www.aclunc.org. Aclu of Northern California, 12 Mar. 2015.
