The Green Office is more than just implementing practices inside the walls of an office. The Green
Office is about implementing practices inside the office, as well as partnering with suppliers, service
companies, and vendors who share the same practices and values.
Bio: Matthew Patten of Peet’s Coffee & Tea.
Matthew works in the wholesale distribution and office coffee channel for Peet’s Coffee & Tea. His
primary duty is to develop office business in the Central United States, working through office coffee service
companies such as ARAMARK Refreshments. Matthew has 17 years of experience in the specialty coffee
industry. He started as a barista with Starbucks Coffee Company in 1994, and spent 14 years with Starbucks in
a variety of positions. Matthew has the unique experience of working for premium coffee brands in many
different roles and skill sets. He has been a barista, a retail store manager, a district manager, a foodservice
account executive and account manager, and a regional sales manager for office services. He has seen the
specialty coffee industry grow and change dramatically, yet he still has a daily passion and drive for great
coffee.

and interpreting state and federal employee benefits law. She is highly regarded speaker on wide range of
employment law topics from HIPAA compliance to COBRA, FMLA and Health Care Reform. Her articles have
appeared in The Wall Street Journal, on MSNBC.com, Human Resource Executive and the Los Angeles and San
Francisco Daily Journal
Karen received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and her Juris Doctor from Duke
University. She is a member of the Employee Benefits Committee for the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar
Association, and a member of the Labor and Employment Law Committee of the Missouri Bar Association.
She is also a member of the Kansas Bar Association. In addition, Karen is a member of the Health Law Forum
and Labor & Employment Law Sections of the American Bar Association.
