SESSION CODE: CLI304 Rhonda J. Layfield DEPLOYMENT AND USER PROFILES (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Rhonda Layfield ► IT industry 30 years ► Setup and Deployment MVP ► Desktop Deployment Product Specialist (DDPS) ► Consulting ► Training – Hands on deployment class Overview ► Types of profiles – – – – Local Roaming Mandatory Super mandatory ► Folder redirection ► Customize the default user profile ► Migrate profiles from XP to Windows 7 (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Local Profile – – – – – Created when a user logs onto a machine User can make changes to the profile Any changes are saved when the user logs off Profiles are not just about user’s data Profiles also contain: • Windows settings – IE Favorites – Drive mappings – Outlook settings • Application settings (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Roaming Profiles Stored on a central server Copied to local machine when user logs on User can make changes to the profile Changes are saved on central server when user logs off – If a roaming profile is not accessible when the user logs on a temporary profile is created – – – – • Temporary profiles are deleted when a user logs off (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Mandatory Profiles – – – – Can be local or roaming User can make changes while logged on Changes are not saved when user logs off If a mandatory roaming profile is not accessible when a user logs on a temporary profile is created from the default network or local profile (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Super Mandatory Profile ► Also a mandatory profile ► There is an additional layer of security ► If a super mandatory profile is not accessible during logon the user will not be permitted to log onto the workstation (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. FOLDER REDIRECTION (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Folder Redirection ► XP you had to log on twice before folder redirection could begin working ► Windows 7 it starts working on the first logon ► Requires offline files (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. OFFLINE FILES (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Windows 7 And Offline Files ► Enabled by default ► Fast first logon ► Usually offline support with background sync ► Exclusion list ► Transparent caching (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Fast First Logon ► When you enabled folder redirection on XP the first time a user logged on could take a long time – All data was copied to the local cache – While the data was being copied locally the user was blocked from logon ► Windows 7 snapshots the data locally and can process logons without having to wait (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Usually Offline Support With Background Sync ► Allows files to be synced with the server in the background so it wont affect the logged on user ► Can be configured using GPOs ► Kicks in when a connection is considered slow – What is a slow connection? • By default data transfer rate of 64,000 bps or more • Can configure the threshold for a slow connection through GPOs (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Exclusion List ► Windows 7 allows you to create a list of file types to be excluded from the synchronization process ► For example you may not want a user’s .MP3 files synchronized to the server – Less network traffic – Less overhead on server (disk space) – Quicker backup and restore of data (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Transparent Caching ► The first time a file is opened from a shared folder the file is cached locally ► Opening the file again: – The file is opened from the local cache – The server is always contacted first to ensure you are opening the latest version of the document – If the server is not available – the cached copy is not opened – Updates are always written directly to the server ► Transparent caching is disabled by default ► Enable it via GPOs (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. All The GPO Settings ► Policies – Computer Configuration • Administrative Templates – Network » Offline Files – There are 28 policy settings you can configure (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Configure Offline Folder Settings Locally ► On Vista and later clients the Offline folder settings can be set locally if you do not want to set them in a GPO ► To set them locally open the Sync Center – Start • Sync Center (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Sync Center Settings CUSTOMIZE THE DEFAULT USER PROFILE (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Customize Default User Profile ► Log on as the built-in local Administrator ► Ensure there are no other user accounts on the machine ► Make your profile changes ► Sysprep with an Unattend answer file that contains the CopyProfile setting (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Sysprep ► Found in Windows \ System32 \ Sysprep ► Command line: – Sysprep /oobe /shutdown /generalize /unattend:C:\Unattend.xml ► When sysprep runs – the local administrator profile is copied to the default user profile ► But – not everything gets copied (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved. MIGRATE PROFILES FROM XP TO WINDOWS 7 (c) 2011 Microsoft. All rights reserved.
