The Handbook coupled with the Queens College Excel Spreadsheet delineating the proper Teacher Preparation Program a graduate has completed should enable the graduate to select and apply for the correct certification. Teacher Certification Office Powdermaker Hall – Room 135 718-997-5547 2 Important Information • The Certification issuance dates (Initial/Professional or Provisional/Permanent) are on the date the State issues the certification. • If you are applying for Initial/Provisional certification: – – – • Your certificate Initial Certificate it will NOT be mailed to you. As of 02/01/10, the NY State Education Department no longer prints Initial/Provisional certificates. If you would like a paper copy of your certificate, you can request one online from the NY State Education Department for an additional fee. Otherwise, please check your NY State account for confirmation of your certification. When being recommended by a college for certification, your completed workshops/seminars will not be listed on the State website. Please keep originals of your workshop completion certificates for your records. Verify that the NY State Education Department has your fingerprints on file. You can check this on the Account Information section of your TEACH account. You MUST have fingerprint clearance in order to become certified. If applying for Professional certification, you MUST mail the following to the NY State Education Department: – Proof of your work experience (Mail proof only if work is not completely full-time): • Minimum of 3 years full-time classroom teaching. – – – • 540 days total part-time/substitute teaching. 180 days of part-time each year. The State counts full-time teaching experience in increments of ½ years. Select “Done” when complete 26 Review Education After reviewing and editing education information if you need, click on next 27 Select the “Edit Employment” button. Only follow this step if you are applying for Professional or Permanent Certification at this time. Otherwise, skip to slide #33 28 Update employment information up to current date – you cannot enter to present as an option (this date section will not accept future dates). Be sure to enter a description of the work experience. Select Add. Refer to next page 29 Example of work experience Example 30 Review entered experience. Add additional employment locations if applicable. Select Add first and then Done. 31 Review all of the below information. If accurate, select “next” 32 You will now be returned to the home menu screen. After answering all the questions using the excel spread sheet on the right hand side of the black line area running down the length of the page (use columns #5, 6, 7, 8, & 9) for your particular certification area they correspond to the questions below. Example 37 Refer to the excel spreadsheet for your program code in # 2 column. Enter it below and select Submit. Example 38 The name of your program should be listed below. If it is not, be sure that you entered the correct program code. Fill in the circle and then select Next. 39 You should see the certificate that you are applying for now listed under “Certificates in this application”. This screen can also be used to apply for additional certifications. Select Next if you are not applying for any additional certifications. If you want to apply for another certificate use this screen. 40 Fill in the circle “ I want my application to be reviewed….” Select Next 41 Answer the following questions accurately on this screen which are on these two pages 42 & 43 42 When complete, Select “sign affidavit” 43 Confirm application information by selecting & clicking the “Sign Application” Button. You are also agreeing to pay $50.00 for each certification you are applying for through the College. Individual applications are $100.00. 44 Carefully read the following screen (pages 45 & 46) outlining the requirements for the certification you are seeking at this point. PRINT for your records • New York State Certification Exam – Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST) New York State requires a series of examinations for certification. The Tests measure knowledge and skills in the liberal arts and sciences, in teaching theory and practice , and in the content area of the certificate title. • New York State Teacher certification Exam – Educating all Students (EAS) New York State requires a series of examinations for certification. The Tests measure knowledge and skills in the liberal arts and sciences, in teaching theory and practice , and in the content area of the certificate title. • Content Specialty Test (CST) - English Language Arts The Content Specialty Test is a component of the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE). Offered in specific subject areas , typically consists of multiple-choice questions and a written assignment. The purpose of the test is to assess knowledge and skills in the subject of the certificate sought. For more information about the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations, including on-line test registration, study guides, testing schedules, and more, go to www.nystce.nesinc.com. • EdTPA – Secondary English 45 • Workshop – Dignity for All Students Act All applicants for a certificate on or after December 31, 2013 are required to complete six clock hours of coursework or training in Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention in accordance with Article 2 Sections 1-18 of the Education Law. Training in Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention is available only from a provider approved by the New York State Education Department. A list of providers is available on the DASA providers Web page. Contact the provider for workshop registration dates and times. Please note that some providers offer training that exceeds the six-hour minimum. Fees vary by provider. Upon completion of the workshop, the provider will give you a Certification of Completion. Send this document to the NYS Education Department, Office of Teaching, 89 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12234 (Photocopies are acceptable). Applicants who complete a registered Teacher Education Program with a graduation date February 20134 or later will be provided the required training as part of their teacher education program. These applicants, if recommended for teaching certificate by the institution, do not need to submit a Certificate of Completion. • Fingerprint Clearance Candidates applying on or after July 1, 2001, must be cleared by the New York State Education Department through a fingerprint-supported criminal history background check. This includes all applicants for certification, as well as all prospective employees of school districts, charter schools and boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES). Candidates fingerprinted and cleared by the New York City Board of Education after July 1, 1990, may submit that clearance to the Department to satisfy this requirement.
