ADVERBS By Ellyn Ball and Lilly Jenkins ADVERBS What is an adverb? ADVERBS Adverbs, too play an important part in sentences. Like adjectives, adverbs are modifiers. Adverbs can modify three different parts of speech-verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Using adverbs can create a more vivid picture in the readers mind. Although adverbs modify adjectives and other adverbs, they generally modify verbs. Example adverbs: finally, never, soon, seldom, carefully, often and very Most of the time adverbs end in LY ADVERBS An adverb that modifies a verb will answer one of these four questions. Where? When? In what way? To what extent? One of California's main attractions is the coastline, which stretches continuously along the western border of the state. 2. Some people enjoy watching grey whales as these whales migrate yearly to the California coast. 3. Others intently view the tide pools for hours at a time. 4. The ocean life seems to disappear as the water rushes in and out. 5. The seals calmly sunbathe on some of the rocky cliffs and swim lazily in the ocean waters. USING ADVERBS THAT MODIFY ADJECTIVES An adverb modifying an adjective answers only one question: To what extent? Adverbs that modify adjectives To What Extent? very upset definitely wrong extremely tall not hungry USING ADVERBS THAT MODIFY OTHER ADVERBS Sometimes adverbs sharpen the meaning of other adverbs. An adverb modifying another adverb answers one question: To What extent? Adverbs modifying Adverbs To What Extent? moved very quickly climbed almost over not completely wrong only just recognized FINDING ADVERBS IN A SENTENCE Location Example At the beginning of a sentence Silently, she approached the ocean. At the end of a sentence She approached the ocean silently. Before a verb She silently approached the ocean. After a verb She tiptoed silently into the ocean. Between parts of a verb phrase She had silently entered the ocean. Before an adjective Her father was always quiet. Before another adverb Her father spoke rather quietly.
