What are we learning about in Reading? This last month we explore our reading super powers. Pointer power, touching each word as we read. Picture power, using the picture as clues to unknown words. Reread power, rereading to better understand what the author wrote. Snap word power, finding snap words (sight words) we know. Partner power, encouraging our partners to use our new super reading powers. Sound power, using letter sounds to sound out words. Pattern power, finding the familiar pattern and reading it fluently. Perseverance power, knowing that when one power doesn’t work, we can always try another. Book talk partner, talking with our partners about our books and retelling the parts of the book. You can try these powers on at home with your child!!! Sight words this month: at, by, will, with, said, get, make, have Ways you can support your child at home: Practice the sight words Read to your child every night Use flash card to blend sound together Break apart words, say a word ask them to tell you all the sounds they hear. What are we learning about in Math? In math, we’ve learned the numbers 0 –20. We also have been learning the language one more, one less, fewer, greater than, and less than. Encourage your child to count out loud to 100, and point out numbers as they see them. Teen numbers can be tricky, they need as much practice as possible! Ways you can support your child at home: Practice counting to 100! Use the number flash cards and beans to count and compare numbers. What are we learning about in Writing? We are getting so good at writing true stories. This month we’ve been learning to turn our labels into sentences to help tell our true stories. We’ve been working really hard to sound out words and write them down. We’ve been given lots of tools to help make our true stories readable, like magic pencils that can be used to reread our stories, vowel charts to help up put vowels in to our words, and our own word wall to keep track of those words we don’t have to sound out anymore! We’ve also started using ‘spaceman’ to help us put spaces in between our words in the sentence.
