Kindergarten “Sight Words” Flash Cards Homework Attached you will find our “sight words” from Unit 1. Sight Words are words that cannot be learned through pictures or by their sounds, don’t follow regular spelling patterns and appear frequently in all books. They must be memorized. It is important that kindergartners learn these words and become automatic in identifying them. Our goal is to have the children read the sight words effortlessly. We introduce 1 or 2 new words each week. New sets of flash cards will be sent home for each unit. Please SAVE all of your child’s cards in a plastic bag. When it is time for word practice, your child has all his/her words in the bag, ready to go. The more children practice the words, the more familiar they will be with what they look like and the more likely they will remember them. Practicing the words at home for just a few minutes each day will make a big difference for your child. Does all this sound overwhelming? It probably won’t be once you get into a routine. Break your sessions into 10 minutes or less at a time. A five year old usually doesn’t have a long attention span, no matter how hard we insist. Long practices will set you up for frustration. Keep it reasonably short, positive and as fun and game-like as possible. Try working for a while, and then go play! Work a little bit more later. Here are some ideas for practicing the sight words flash cards at home: See and Say Flashcards: (Traditional way) Hold up a flashcard. Look at the flashcard and say the word. Find My Word: Spread the cards all over the floor. Say a word. Have your child find it. Word Scramble: Spread the cards all over the floor. See how fast your child can read and pick them up. Choose a word card. Write or say a sentence with the word in it. Letter Magnet Spelling—If you have a set of magnetic alphabet letters, call out a word and ask your child to use the magnets to spell the word. Cheer and spell your words--Pretend you are a cheerleader and call out your words! Write your words—on paper with pencil, outside with sidewalk chalk, build them with Popsicle sticks or pretzels, “rainbow write” them in 3 colors with markers Sort the words: Sort the flashcards into words that have the same beginning letter, words with 3 letters, 4 letters, etc.
