Sunday in
Ordinary Time
I can recall singing
‘He’s Got the Whole
World in His Hands’
at
Masses
back
when folk or guitar
music was in its
infancy!
At last
June’s Mass for my
elementary school,
Saint
Paul
the
Apostle in Irvington’s, ‘All-Class Reunion’ we
sang some ‘oldies but goodies’ of that era: ‘Here
We Are,’ ‘Alle, Alle,’ and ‘Sons of God!’’ Liturgical
music and lyrics has evolved since then; those
tunes and words were so basic, so simplistic and
a bit infantile - yet their theology was profoundly
deep! In those days, some expected nuclear war
to annihilate all creation, so we needed to recall
that the world is firmly in God’s hands! But as
today’s Preface reminds us: God also made us
stewards of creation:
Preface V of the Sundays in Ordinary Time: Creation
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
For you laid the foundations of the world and have
arranged the changing of times and seasons;
you formed man in your own image and set
humanity over the whole world in all its wonder,
to rule in your name over all you have made
and for ever praise you in your mighty works,
through Christ our Lord.
And so, with all the Angels, we praise you,
as in joyful celebration we acclaim:
The Church: The First To Be ‘Green.’ Long before
the
preservation,
just
distribution
and
safeguarding for future generations of God’s gift
of creation became a primary concern - or as we
now say “the PC” or Politically Correct thing to do
- the Church was -as we also say - green!’ For
since the 1960’s the Mass has had a Preface
extolling God’s gift of creation and highlighting
our role as its steward. What’s a steward?
Jesus often said we are stewards from whom
God will one day demand an account of our
stewardship. In one parable He said it this way:
“A rich man had a steward who was reported to
him for squandering his property. He summoned
him and said, ‘What is this I hear about you?
Prepare a full account of your stewardship,
because you can no longer be my steward.’”
[Luke 16:1-2] Jesus also warned that all to whom
more has been entrusted, more will be
demanded! [C.f. Luke 12:48] So we who live in a
land blessed with so many natural resources
must be exemplary in the way we conserve,
ration, share and recycle all God has entrusted to
us … or else!
Catholic doctrine and teaching on our care for
environment - as well as today’s Preface - are all
firmly rooted in the Sacred Scriptures. In fact, the
first two lines of the Preface - which describe
how God laid the world’s foundation, set all
things in motion and continues to govern it - and
made the human person the highpoint and
overseer of all created things, summarize the first
two chapters of the Book of Genesis.
The Bible also stresses how all created things,
each in their particular way, offer praise to the
Creator. Some Psalms and Canticles [the term for
biblical songs NOT found in the Book of Psalms or songs of
praise] sing of how even inanimate objects and
non-human life bless the Lord:
Sun and moon, bless the Lord;
Stars of heaven, bless the Lord;
Every shower and dew, bless the Lord;
All you winds, bless the Lord;
Fire and heat, bless the Lord;
Cold and chill, bless the Lord;
Dew and rain, bless the Lord;
Frost and chill, bless the Lord;
Hoarfrost and snow, bless the Lord;
Nights and days, bless the Lord;
Light and darkness, bless the Lord;
Lightnings and clouds, bless the Lord;
Let the earth bless the Lord,
Mountains and hills, bless the Lord;
Everything growing on earth, bless the Lord;
You springs, bless the Lord;
Seas and rivers, bless the Lord;
You sea monsters and all water creatures,
bless the Lord
All you birds of the air, bless the Lord;
All you beasts, wild and tame, bless the Lord;
All you mortals, bless the Lord.
[C.f. Daniel 3:62-82 or for the entire Canticle: 51-90]
How can you more profoundly and prayerfully
‘bless the Lord’ by your use of all created things?
In His holy Name,
Rev. Thomas J. Serafin

Next week’s Pastor’s Bulletin Article
explains the history and purpose of
next week’s Exaltation of the Holy
Cross, which preempts the 24th Sunday
in Ordinary Time. To help carry in the Cross we
will adore during Mass, contact the Parish Office
to let us know which Mass you will attend next
weekend. Just come 15 minutes early for a brief,
simple rehearsal. It is also the traditional day to
bless crosses and crucifixes [a cross with an
image of Christ’s Body] so bring them to Mass
next weekend; they will be blessed during each
Mass’s Concluding Rites.

Have you or anyone you know been considering
the possibility of becoming a member of the
Catholic Church? Is there someone in your life
with whom you’d like to share their Catholic
faith? Have you been coming to Mass for years
and feel that now is the time for you to become
Catholic?
Whatever your reasons might be for choosing to
become Catholic, beneath that choice is God
who is calling you to “Come and see!” The Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way in
which adults become fully active, participating
members of the Catholic Church. It helps adults
grow in their relationship with God, become
familiar with Catholic teachings and practices,
get acquainted with people in the parish and get
involved in service with the parish and wider
community.
Through this process non-Christian adults are
prepared for Baptism, Confirmation and first
Eucharist, and non-Catholic Christians and
Catholics who are only baptized are prepared for
Confirmation and first Eucharist, which takes
place at the Easter Vigil. Ready to find out more?
