Taxonomy of Organisms
6.12 C
Taxonomy
The branch of Science that
formally names and classifies
organisms by their structure,
function and relationships.
Domains
All forms of life are
classified into 3
Domains. This based on
their characteristics. It’s
the BROADEST level
of organization.
They are…. Bacteria,
Archaea & Eukarya

Kingdom
Biologist have organized all living things into 6 large groups called Kingdoms. They are
classified based on their specific characteristics.
6 Kingdoms: Archaea,
Bacteria, Plant, Animal
Fungi, and Protista
Domain: Archaea
Kingdom: Archaea Bacteria
Domain Archaea only has ONE Kingdom…Archaea bacteria.
They come from EXTREME environments. Most die in the
presence of oxygen.
All organisms in the Archaea bacteria Kingdom must be:
• Unicellular
• Prokaryotic
• Autotrophic and Heterotrophic
• Asexual and Sexual Reproduction
Domain: Bacteria
Kingdom: Eubacteria
Domain Bacteria only has ONE Kingdom…Eubacteria. They live
in many different environments. Some need oxygen, but others die
in the presence of oxygen.
All organisms in the Eubacteria Kingdom must be:
• Unicellular
• Prokaryotic
• Autotrophic and Heterotrophic
• Asexual and Sexual Reproduction
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdoms: Animal, Plant,
Fungi, Protista
This Domain contains the most
Kingdoms…4 total. All of the Kingdoms
contain organisms that are Eukaryotic.
Hence the name Eukarya Domain.
The 4 Kingdoms are:
• Plant
• Animal
• Fungi
• Protista
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: PlantAE
All cells have Nucleus and a Cell Wall.
Ex: mosses, ferns, flowering plants, trees,
bushes
They are:
• Multicellular
• Eukaryotic
• Autotrophic
• Asexual and Sexual Reproduction
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animal
This kingdom is the one that you belong to. All
organisms in this kingdom can be divided into
vertebrates and invertebrates.
Ex: insects, fish, humans, worms, starfish, dogs,
cats, pig, dolphin
They are:
• Multicellular
• Eukaryotic
• Heterotrophic
• Asexual and Sexual Reproduction
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Fungi
Some may confuse Fungi with Plants,
but they are NOT plants. Fungi are
decomposers, but like plants they do
have a cell wall.
Ex: Yeast, mold, mushrooms
They are:
Unicellular and Multicellular
Eukaryotic
Heterotrophic
Asexual and Sexual Reproduction
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Protista
Protista can be complicated. Some
Protista in a dark environment are
heterotrophic, but in light they are
autotrophic.
Ex: Amoeba, Euglena, Algae, Diatom,
and Paramecium
They are:
Unicellular and Multicellular
Eukaryotic
Autotrophic and Heterotrophic
Asexual and Sexual Reproduction
