C. Richard Vaughn, Chairman and CEO of John S. Clark
Company announced the promotion of Barry Hennings,
P.E., LEED AP to the position of President and COO.
“I am pleased to announce that Barry Hennings will assume
the duties of President and Chief Operating Officer of John
S. Clark Company, LLC effective January 1, 2010. Barry
has been a faithful and devoted employee of the Company
since December 1984. Since that time, Barry has
successfully served as a Project Manager and Vice
President of Operations in our Winston-Salem office before
assuming his position of Executive Vice President of the
Mount Airy operations ten years ago”, said Mr. Vaughn.
Barry will also become Chairman/CEO of Design, Inc., John
S Clark’s wholly owned architectural firm.
Barry joined the company after graduating from NC State University Cum Laude with a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He also completed the Advanced
Management Program at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in 2008. He is a
Registered Professional Engineer in NC, VA and WVA and is a Certified Building
Contractor in FL, GA, VA and WVA.
In keeping with the company’s commitment to sustainable design and construction,
Barry was among the first managers to become a LEED Accredited Professional and is
a member of the US Green Building Council.
Since 1998 when he was promoted to EVP of the Mount Airy Operations, Barry has
demonstrated his leadership and strategic thinking by constantly searching for new
and better ways to serve the company’s clients thru innovative project management,
estimating and accounting systems. His division became the “beta test site” for each
innovation and was the first to implement new programs. Barry has become the “go to”
manager when challenging projects were undertaken and his division routinely
completed the largest and most complex projects in the company’s history.
Retiring President Jim Walker said, “The Company is very fortunate to have a person
with Barry’s knowledge, experience and leadership skills already in place, ready to
move into this position. I know the company will prosper with Barry leading the way.”
Jim and Barry have been working on this transition for several months and since Barry
is already well known to many of the company’s clients, the move should be seamless.
The company’s history includes the leadership of another member of the Hennings
family. Barry’s father, Joe Hennings was a long time employee at Clark and was
President from 1990 to 2001. Father and son holding the same position in a company
outside of a family owned business is unusual and the irony of the situation is not lost
on the new President.

the company and my family has been associated with John S Clark for a very long
time. The challenges we are facing in this economy are different that those faced by
my father when he was President. However, we will meet these challenges with the
same hard work and determination he used while continuing to be a good corporate
citizen in the communities where we work and providing our employees with rewarding
careers.” Barry added, “as long as we make our client’s best interests our number one
priority, we will be able to grow and prosper, even in difficult times. I am looking
forward to the challenge.”
