Etymology Honors
Course Description:
a semester-long, rigorous vocabulary development course, is the study of the
derivation of words. Students study the history of a word based on Latin and
Greek elements, break it into basic elements, trace it to the earliest known forms,
and indicate changes in form and meaning. This credit does not count as one of
the four English courses required for graduation.
Required Materials:
pen, pencil, flashcards, 3-ring binger (at least 1” recommended), notebook paper
Textbook:
English Words from Latin and Greek Elements, second edition
By Donald M. Ayers, revised by Tomas D. Worthen
Tentative Course Schedule:
Quarter One: common etymological terms, dictionary usage, Latin word
elements
Quarter Two: connections to Greek Mythology, specialized vocabulary terms,
Greek word elements
Classroom Policies
Be on time.
Be prepared.
Be respectful of Ms. Cozzens and classmates.
Failure to abide by these rules will result in teacher correction, parent
notification, and disciplinary referral.
Grading Policies:
We will use the “total points” grading system in this class. These are the
approximate point ranges I plan to use when evaluating your work:
Daily Grades: 10-20 pts
Quizzes: 30-50 pts
Tests: 80-100 pts
Projects: 60-100 pts (some will require significantly more work than others)
