Ancient History 2015-2016 Greece and Culture Students will (in groups) research one aspect of the Greek civilization. Then, students will present their civilization to the class in a 20 minute presentation. Projects are to be researched as if this were a large paper. However, no paper will be written. The presentation MUST include posters, power-points, videos, and any other examples that students may wish to use to get their information across. You will need to hand in the following: 1. A bibliography (minimum of three sources, cited in either APA or MLA format) 2. An outline of your research and presentation (PPT in handout form) You will need to demonstrate the following: 1. Expertise in your presentation; know everything, be able to answer questions, tell us interesting stories (whether true or just “believed” about your group). 2. Examples of what you are speaking about (use pictures and maps). These are mandatory! Here are the choices: The Greek philosophers Achievements in Greek sciences and mathematics Minoans Mycenaean City –state of Athens City –state of Sparta Messenian Wars Persian Wars Peloponnesian Wars Theories of Atlantis (?) Daily life for Greek citizens Macedonians and Alexander the Great You must be able to answer the following, to the best of your research ability: Who were they? From what groups do they trace their heritage? Are there remnants of them today? Who were their important people? When & where did they exist? Maps are a good idea. For how long were they in existence? What happened after? Where did they come from? What did they accomplish? Did they add anything to society? Impact – what famous or great events can be traced to this group? Daily Life – How did they live? What did they trade? Did they have classes in their society? You are going to have about a week of intense research, but then next week be expected to present. Keys to Success Do your work. Students who know their topic inside and out usually show that expertise in their seminars. Those who did the bare minimum usually also show that. 2. Be prepared for any and all questions. One never knows what their fellow students (or the instructor) will ask. 3. If at ANY point during the research and preparation process you are confused as to what you are talking about, SEE ME! Do not walk into your presentation with only a vague notion of your topic. 4. DON’T READ ANYTHING! KNOW IT! 1. All projects must include the following: 1. One page TYPED outline presented to me before your presentation begins. 2. Must use at least 2 of the following aids: handouts, charts, video, PowerPoint, pictures, posters, quizzes, etc. Any visual aid must be big enough to see from the back of the room. 3. Time restraints: 20 minutes 4. You will be evaluated by your classmates and your teacher. Criteria will be discussed in class. 5. Be innovative, be creative. Do something different. 6. Keep in mind; even though this is an elective class, you’re giving a presentation in a professional manner. Be prepared. 7. Don’t arrive in class wondering if your power-point (or whatever) will work. E-mail it to me before hand (at least 2 days!). Arrange with me to have copies made of any handouts. Make any other arrangements that are necessary. ** The class is to take notes on each presentation. Information WILL show up on the following Unit Tests, so be aware, pay attention, and enjoy.
