THE MAYAN SCHOOL MATHEMATICS SYLLABUS FIRST QUARTER 2012-2013 Subject: Math ( Pre-Calculus) 11th grade sections A & B Teacher: Mr. Oscar Andino Email: Oandino@mayanschool.edu.hn Class description: The content of the math class for 11th grade is pre – calculus. This year the students will learn the properties, algebra, graphs and language of functions. Specifically, on the first quarter students will learn about nth roots, real exponents, systems of Equations, Functions from a calculus perspective, Power, Polynomial, and Rational Functions. Text book: The textbook needed to support the course is Pre-calculus, Glencoe, a Mc Graw Hill Company. This text book will be provided by the school under contract terms of lending Class objectives: Students will be able to acknowledge the following objectives: Simplify expressions in radical and in exponential form Solve systems of linear and quadratic equations Identify functions and determine their domains, ranges, y-intercepts and zeros Evaluate the continuity, end behavior, limits, and extrema of a function. Calculate rates of change of nonlinear functions Identify parent functions and transformations Perform operations with functions, identify composite functions, and calculate inverse functions Structure of the course: this section states the probable way the course will be developed: Week 1: week. Section 0.4: nth Roots and Real Numbers. A class work will be given at the end of the Week 2: Section 0.5: Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities, Extra: Quadratic Systems. A Computer activity will be developed at the end of the week. Week 3: week. Extra: Quadratic Systems, 1.1: Functions. A Math Game will take place at the end of the Week 4: Section 1.2: Analyzing Graphs of Functions and Relations. Math Quiz #1 Week 5: 1.3: Continuity, End Behavior, and Limits, 1.4: Extrema and Average Rates of change. Class Work #2. Week 6: Second Part of Section 1.4, Section 1.5: Parent Functions and Transformations. Computer Activity #2 Week 7: Second Part of Section 1.5, Section 1.6: Functions Operations and Compositions of Functions. Math Game # 2 Week 8: Section 1.7: Inverse Relations and Functions, Section 2.1: Power and Radical Functions. Math Quiz # 2 Week 9: Section 2.2: Polynomial Functions of Real Numbers. Week 10: I Quarter Tests Grading structure: The grading structure of the course includes: Class Works: 10% (5 class works assigned during the I Quarter) Math Games: 10% (2 games will be developed) Computer activities: 10% (2 activities will be developed) Quizzes: 10% (Two in total) Class Works: 10% (2 class works) Homework: 10% (At least 4 homework will be assigned per week)) Quarter Test: 50% (It covers all the topics seen through the quarter) Academic integrity: this includes the basic rules for the course. 1. The course is completely taught in English and students must speak only English. 2. Homework and class work will be checked on student´s notebooks, with the teacher´s sign and date that the assignment was completed. A late homework will be accepted only one day after it´s assignment, for half credit. Class work will be accepted late, one day after, if the student was absent and presents a corresponding excuse. 3. Students must be on time for the class. Students who get late, will come in( with a late pass) but, they will lose the points of the respective assignation. 4. If a student miss a quiz without excuse, the points of it will be lost. 5. Cheating is not allowed in the Math class, if the teacher finds any cheating, all the points will be lost. 6. Students must have their own materials, including the textbook, everyday, for each class.
