Historical Context
Major events
.Establishment of colonies(1607)
.French and Indian War:(1754-63) The major cause is that Britain
felt they needed to prevent the French from gaining control over
trade and territories that the British thought were rightfully
theirs.
.Great Awakening:(1730s-40s) Religious revival among Protestants
.Enlightenment:(1620-1780) Welcoming of logical and scientifical
thinking

economics and religion
.Colonist from Europe came to America. The two major colonies were
Jamestown and Plymouth.Jamestown colonist came for economic reasons,
seeking gold, and the Puritans came to increase the influence of
religion and culture on their people.
.Great Awakening: A religious movement led by Martin Luther
questioned Catholicism and its role in government. This led to break
offs and denominations from the Catholic Church. England converted
to Protestantism and created the Church of England.
.Navigation Act: An act created by England that all goods from the
colony had to be sent on English ships and the colonist could ONLY
trade with England. Because this was established without colonial
representation his led to rebellion and smuggling.
Politics:
.In 1620, the Plymouth colonist tried to
establish their colony as a self-governed
colony with the Mayflower Compact. In 1607,
Jamestown was established as a
representative government that met at the
Jamestown Church, although it still
remained a colony of England.

Values and BELIEFS
. Roanoke was the first colony England tried to establish but
it became known as the “lost colony” and still remains a
mystery today.
. Plymouth colonist came for religious freedom while
Jamestown colonist came in search for gold but eventually
flourished on tobacco.
. Colonist had a sense of entitlement to Native land which
was not rightfully theirs.
Values and Beliefs
.Strongly believed in order, hard work, education, a
god- centered society, and community which was also
prevalent in their writing.
.Puritans believed the nature of man was evil and that
wealth is a gift from God (the reward of a virtuous
life).
.Religion was a major factor in colonial life. Various
religious groups included Puritans and Pilgrims in
Massachusetts, quakers in Pennsylvania, and Catholics in
Maryland represented the growing religious diversity in
the colonies. Rhode Island was founded as a colony of
religious freedom in reaction to zealous Puritans.
Genres
.Narratives: A written or spoken story of
connecting events. During this period colonist were
intrigued by stories of captured victims of the
Natives.
.Bible: Christian scriptures.The Bible was the most
popular book of the time.
.Poetry: Literary work in which special intensity
is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by
the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems
collectively or as a genre of literature
.Orally: transmitted myths, legends, tales by
Natives
Style
. Handwritten or printed on a press.
.Upper case letters were used to begin nouns as well as to begin
sentences.
.Spelling was not standardized. Writers would spell words
differently in different documents or even within a single document.
.Writings of the original colonies and the Puritan religious regions
