The Essentials of Healthcare is a medical-focused anatomy course addressing the physiology of each body system, along with the investigation of common diseases, disorders and emerging diseases. The prevention of disease and the diagnosis and treatment that might be utilized are addressed, along with medical terminology related to each system. This course provides an opportunity to demonstrate technical skills that enforce the goal of helping students make connections between medical procedures and the pathophysiology of diseases and disorders. The pre-requisite for this course is Introduction to Healthcare. Topics Covered in Accordance with the Georgia Performance Standards www.georgiastandards.org Employability Skills Medical Terminology/ abbreviations Basic & Functional Organization of the Human Body Integumentary System Cardiovascular System Respiratory System Lymphatic System Muscular/Skeletal Systems Urinary System Reproductive System Nervous System & Special Senses Endocrine System Digestive System Major Course Goals/Objectives Set the foundations for each student seeking a career in the healthcare industry to ensure success and fundamental knowledge. Encourage each student to develop their communication styles according to their audience while building respect, integrity, and teamwork skills within their class. Supplies Needed Each student should secure the following supplies during the first week of class: 3-ring binder w/ dividers Pens (Blue/Black) & Pencils USB Drive Possible costs associated with the course 1. Individual Supplies 2. *CPR Card 3. Joining HOSA $35.00. (HOSA: Future Health Professionals)-Membership Dues. Dues include National, State, and local fees as well as a t-shirt. 4. Replacement of Damaged Equipment (See Behavior Expectations) *During the CPR unit of the course, students will have the option to purchase a CPR card upon successful completion of the CPR course test and evaluation. The card cost $6. This is an added perk for the students and is not required for course completion. Attendance Requirements/Make-up work Absences: If a student must be absent, it is the student’s responsibility, to make arrangements for make-up work. Policy on Late Work Students who do not turn in their work on time, due to excused reasons, will receive a penalty. For each day an assignment is late, it will receive a 10% deduction from the possible grade. No work will be accepted that is not complete. Policy on Tardiness Students are expected to be in class on time as listed on the bell schedule. Students who are late to class will be subject to detention. Class work/Daily Grades Test/Quizzes 35% 45% Work Ethic Grade 20% Class work, Homework, Daily grades, Tests, Projects, Clinical Lab Check-offs, Weekly Quizzes Graded Weekly Students are expected to learn and practice a good work ethic. Students will be held to a high standard and be expected to present themselves in a professional manner. The Work Ethic grade is worth 20 points a day. This will equal 100 points a week.
