The 4th Annual West Virginia Youth Science Camp

This camp is modeled after the National Youth Science Camp and will be held July 8-19, 2014 at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, WV.

The West Virginia Youth Science Camp is entirely free of charge and operated by the National

Freedom of Speech Video Contest Gives Students a Voice

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Creative students could win as much as $500 for developing a video about the U.S. Constitution as part of a video contest sponsored by the West Virginia

Department of Education and the West Virginia State Bar. Participants are asked to create a 3minute video with the theme “We the People: Freedom of Speech.” The contest is open to West

Virginia public school students in grades 6 – 12. Entries will be divided by middle school and high school. First place in each category receives $500, while second place wins $250. The creators of the first place videos also will be invited to attend the West Virginia State Bar's annual meeting on May 9 at the Sheraton Four Points in Charleston. Videos will be judged based on originality, creativity, adherence to the theme and overall quality. Entries must include parental permission for those under the age of 18. Students interested in entering the contest can fill out an application as well as read the rules at http://wvde.state.wv.us/wvstatebar Submissions for 2014 will be accepted from Feb. 17 to April 4.

The 2014 West Virginia MAD Festival

The MAD Festival will take place on the Campus of West Liberty University on Friday, April

11, from 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM. It will be a day filled with sixty workshop sessions, professional presentations, and a student media arts awards competition and ceremony.

Teaching and Learning in the Visual Arts Classroom

Integrating 21 st

Century skills and technology tools into all areas of education is necessary

to prepare today's students to compete globally. This six session online course, plus an orientation session, is one of several eLearning courses that focus on incorporating 21 st

Century teaching and learning. Participants in this course will be introduced to 21 st Century skills and tools and how they can be used in the visual arts classroom, grades K-12.

Participants in this course will complete an instructional plan that includes 21 st

Century skills and tools. Based upon course revisions during Summer 2011 this course will be, effective October 2011, recognized as a technology course and will meet the technology coursework requirements for recertification. Participants in this course must be employed as a visual arts teacher. Online Theatre Classes:

The WV Virtual School does plan to offer online theatre courses. There is one running right now, one will be offered in the winter session, and one in the spring session. Winter and spring courses will be offered based on enrollment.

The courses are free, unless a participant wants graduate credit. If they want non-degree, graduate credit, the tuition costs between $99 and $173, depending on the institution they wish to go through. Arts Education for America’s Students: A Shared Endeavor

The State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE), in partnership with 12 national arts and education organizations, has released Arts Education for America’s Students, a

Shared Endeavor, a statement outlining the importance of high quality arts education and those responsible for providing it to students. A Shared Endeavor articulates the purpose and value of arts education in the balanced curriculum of all students, asserts its place as a core academic subject area, and details how sequential arts learning can be supported by rigorous national standards and assessments. The statement, created over a 12-month period by the endorsing organizations, responds to the alarming marginalization of quality arts education in America’s schools in recent years, as funding, staffing, and school time has increasingly focused on tested subject areas. Acknowledging the long history and support for arts education by public and private partners, A Shared Endeavor defines what quality arts education looks like at the local level, encourages partnerships, and calls on organizations and individuals to actively support and promote:

Policies and resources for arts education.

Access to arts education for all students.

Collaboration between school-based arts educators, other subject area teachers, and community-based artists and arts educators.

Long-term advocacy partnership between all providers of arts education.
