On behalf of the WV Reading Association:

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin has declared March 2014 READING WITH THE ARTS: OFF THE

CHARTS MONTH to coincide with National Youth Art Month.

In a Governor’s Proclamation issued to the West Virginia Reading Association on March 5,

2014, the proclamation stressed the positive impact on student achievement and student learning in reading when teachers included arts rich lessons within their reading programs.

The arts are defined as art, dance, music and theater. When these forms of the arts are combined with scientifically based reading research strategies, student comprehension increases.

The West Virginia Reading Association (WVRA) is promoting the integration of the arts with reading programs during 2014. This promotion will conclude with their 59 th

Annual Conference, which will celebrate the role of the arts in reading instruction. The conference will be held

November 20 and 21, 2014 at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The conference currently attracts over 500 educators, civic leaders and literacy support groups.

Anyone interested in presenting, registering, or renting exhibit hall space for the conference can find additional information at http://www.wvreading.com/

On Behalf of David Sharpe – Kindermusik International

ABC Music & Me by Kindermusik is a rich multi-sensory program focused on teacher engagement to provide learning at each child’s pace and developmental level. Research bears out the fact that participation in music and movement produces higher scores in a variety of areas– exploring, observing, discovering, playing- produce 32% increase in literacy gains. Our primary goal is total growth for the developing child, and we are constantly aware of how the experiences of music and movement foster growth in other areas: physical, emotional, cognitive, language and social. The carefully integrated selection and development of activities in every lesson also incorporates parental involvement on several levels. All activities introduce more than one key curricular component or learning domain and the integration of components typically involves using more than one sense. This is how ABC Music & Me helps to develop the whole child. When young children are consistently engaged by music in an age-appropriate, socially accepting environment- everyone succeeds! Arts Education for America’s Students: A Shared Endeavor

The State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE), in partnership with 12 national arts and education organizations, has released

Arts Education for America’s Students, a

Shared Endeavor, a statement outlining the importance of high quality arts education and those responsible for providing it to students. A Shared Endeavor articulates the purpose and value of arts education in the balanced curriculum of all students, asserts its place as a core academic subject area, and details how sequential arts learning can be supported by rigorous national standards and assessments. The statement, created over a 12-month period by the endorsing organizations, responds to the alarming marginalization of quality arts education in America’s schools in recent years, as funding, staffing, and school time has increasingly focused on tested subject areas. Acknowledging the long history and support for arts education by public and private partners, A Shared Endeavor defines what quality arts education looks like at the local level, encourages partnerships, and calls on organizations and individuals to actively support and promote:

Policies and resources for arts education.

Access to arts education for all students.

Collaboration between school-based arts educators, other subject area teachers, and community-based artists and arts educators.

Long-term advocacy partnership between all providers of arts education.
