Subject: ENG III AP Grade Level: 11th Instructional Time: Approximately 4 instructional days (90 min. classes) Lesson Plan: Argument through advertisement Materials: Paper, Powerpoint presentation – “Ethos, Logos, or Pathos?” and computer access. SLO: In this lesson, students will be able to understand and use Aristotle’s three well-known modes of persuasion: ethos, logos and pathos. Students will create an advertisement by focusing on a specific issue. Objectives: During the mini lesson, students will differentiate the use of appeals in several advertisement examples. Students will demonstrate the use of at least one appeal in their advertisement. Assessment: Final group created advertisement through the use of technology Grade scale: See Rubric Agenda Day 1: Teacher will show quick online presentations to understand Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. After differentiating between the concepts, teacher will show a powerpoint with examples of advertisements that include each form of appeal and progress to advertisements with more than one appeal. As a quick assessment, students will be put in groups of three and ask to identify use of appeals within the assigned advertisement. (Teacher will model first). Teacher will explain the project requirements and students’ tasks necessary to achieve student outcomes such as rules, student expectations, rubric and student presentation. Teacher will begin a class discussion about the issue that students will be demonstrating in their project. Issue: Positive ways for students to use electronic devices in the classroom. Students will be assigned in groups of two or three randomly. Day 2: Students will begin brainstorming and planning their advertisement. Teacher will be monitoring student progress. Students will submit their preliminary project idea(s) for teacher approval. Teacher will approve projects prior to class ending. Upon teacher approval, students will begin creating their advertisement. (Some students may be required to continue planning outside of the classroom). Day 3: Students will be taken to the computer lab to work on their advertisement. Teacher will actively monitor student progress. Students will need to complete their advertisement by the end of class time. Day 4: Students will present their advertisement by interacting with their classmates. Rationale: How are appeals use in advertisement? What effects do they have in the audience? What is the purpose for applying the appeals in advertisement? By looking carefully at those questions, students will be able to identify, analyze and apply ethos, logos and pathos while creating an advertisement (responding to an issue). Their critique will enable them to apply the appeals while they respond to the issue. However, some boundaries must be set to ensure the safety of students and to keep the projects school-appropriate. Please adhere to the following guidelines and limitations when creating your projects. 1. Realistic-looking weapons, guns, or blades (including pellet, Airsoft, and paintball guns) are not appropriate for this project. Additionally, they should never be used for filming when outdoors, as they can easily be mistaken for real weapons. 2. Never film or videotape in an open public place, like a park or neighborhood street, at night. Neighbors may not be aware that you are taping and may contact the authorities. It’s a good practice to post signs stating “Video Project in Progress” whenever filming in a public area. 3. References to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco use are not appropriate for this project. 4. Foul language is not appropriate to school-related work. 5. References to sexually explicit situations are not appropriate for this project. 6. (Adapted by M.
