Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Edition #18 Cathedral High School Vision Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution, will be the model for all high schools as she profoundly shapes the way students think, serve and lead. Dear Cathedral Parents, Cathedral High School Mission Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school, provides to a diverse group of students opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth through service and academic excellence. As you know, the Cathedral Irish Football Team won the 4A State Championship on Saturday. On Monday, we had a terrific pep rally to congratulate our football team. The students were jubilant and took part in this pep rally in a most appropriate manner. Mayor Greg Ballard (’72) was present, the team was honored, and Coach Streiff had his head shaved. Also, since our tradition means that a Free Day comes with a State Championship, our free day was announced as Monday, April 25th, which is Easter Monday. Please mark your calendars and/or Blue Books with this date. Today, we had an Advent Reconciliation Service for all of our students. How fortunate we are to be in a Catholic school where the Sacraments of the Church can be celebrated by our students. Visiting priests generously gave of their time to make these times of reconciliation possible for us. This is just a reminder that semester 1 final exams will begin on Tuesday, December 14th. The exam schedule is included within this document. Pages have the opportunity to spend a day at the Statehouse working with their senator and Senate staff in the upcoming legislative session, which runs from Wednesday, Jan. 5 to Friday, April 29. Students who page learn about the legislative process through observation and participation. By 5 interacting firsthand with legislators and staff, state government is brought to life. Pages get to see lawmakers introduce bills, debate and vote on important issues, all while meeting other students from Indiana. Interested students should submit page requests as soon as possible in a letter or e-mail. The student's name - as it would appear on a certificate - address, home telephone number, age and school affiliation should be included with requests. Friends wanting to page on the same day should send requests together. Specific date requests will be considered, but may not be possible. The Senate's page office will confirm the scheduled date after processing incoming requests. To be a page this session, e-mail requests to your Senator. S/he can be found at this website: www.in.gov/legislative/ ~~~~~ Attention, senior parents. The following e-mail message was sent on Monday to the seniors who have not had their yearbook portrait taken: Dear Senior, If you are receiving this message, the Prestige Portraits photo tracker shows that you have not had your senior portrait taken. Remember, if your picture is to appear with the rest of your class in the senior section of the 2011 yearbook, you must have a yearbook portrait taken by Prestige even if you had your other senior pictures taken elsewhere. You now have two options: 1. Call today to make an appointment for a sitting. If you want a series of senior pictures in addition to your yearbook shot, this is the only option, but you can also do this if all you want is the yearbook shot. Call 829-2080 during business hours (Tues-Thurs 2p. to 7p; Friday, 2p. to 5p.; and Saturday 10a. to 5p—though they at some point reduce their hours as the year’s end nears). 2. The second option is available only on Thursday, Dec. 2 (this coming Thursday) and is only for the yearbook shot. Prestige will bring a portrait camera to our campus on that day and will be located in the Welch Center lobby from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. (roughly the lunch periods). This is a very convenient way to get your yearbook shot. You’ll need to bring the $15 sitting fee and a dressy top to change into for the picture. Just go to the WAC when you can, during your lunch if necessary, get dressed, hand the photographer the money and get it done. No appointment necessary. We couldn’t make it any easier. 3. PLEASE get this taken care of. We want every senior in the book. It’s your senior-year yearbook. I would appreciate a response telling me you have already made an appointment or that you will get it taken in one of these two ways. Thanks, Mr. Hannan Senior Mass with the Archbishop: Seniors will be here for first period and a small part of 2nd on Monday, December 6. There are free the rest of the day after the mass. Dress for the day is school uniform with a Cathedral sweatshirt. College sweatshirts are not appropriate for this day. If a sweatshirt is worn, it is to be a Cathedral one. Junior and Senior Boys: If you are open to the possibility of priesthood, you are invited to attend a Day of Reflection and Discernment led by Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, O.S.B. This will be on Saturday, December 11th, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Archbishop’s Home in Indianapolis. Please register by emailing the Vocations’ Office at cmitchell@archindy.org or contact by phone at 317/236-1490. You may 12-2010 High School Flyer.pdf also check out the website at www.HearGodsCall.com. A flyer about this day is also attached to this email. ~~~~~ Here is a press release from the Indiana State Department of Health regarding the recent outbreak of Pertussis in Indiana, and a copy of a Pertussis Fact Sheet. Sometimes school breaks are good in a sense of less kids coming into contact with each other in a school setting, but also rough in we can be around a lot of different people from other part of the state and beyond and share new germs and bring back home and to school. If you have any specific questions regarding pertussis please let me know. 6 State Health Officials Concerned About Pertussis “Whooping Cough” Outbreak Facts About Pertussis for Adults National Foundation for Infectious Diseases 4733 Bethesda Avenue, Suite 750, Bethesda, MD 20814 (301) 656-0003. Web site: www.nfid.org January 2008 What is pertussis? Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a serious infection that spreads easily from person to person. The infection causes coughing spells so severe that it can be hard to breathe, eat or sleep. It can even lead to cracked ribs, pneumonia or hospitalization. Pertussis has been on the rise in the United States since an all-time low of just over 1,000 cases were reported in 1976. While 25,616 cases were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2005, the vast majority of cases go unreported and some estimates of true incidence range from one to three million cases annually. Symptoms Early symptoms of pertussis are similar to the common cold or bronchitis and may include runny nose, sneezing and low-grade fever. The infection also causes coughing that lasts for weeks, even months. Sometimes a “whoop” sound occurs while gasping for breath during a bad coughing spell. However, the “whoop” is not always present; adults rarely have the classic “whoop.” Prevention Whooping cough is most contagious before the coughing starts, so the most effective way to prevent it is through immunization. The whooping cough booster vaccine for adults (and adolescents) is called Tdap (tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis). Children get a different formulation, called DTaP. Both protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Two Tdap vaccines are currently licensed for use in the U.S. One preparation can be used for both adults and adolescents, and the other has been approved for use only in adolescents: • ADACEL (sanofi pasteur) for use in persons 11 to 64 years of age • Boostrix (GlaxoSmithKline) for use in persons 10 to 18 years of age Who should get the Tdap vaccine? The CDC recommends that adults 19 to 64 years of age (and adolescents 11 to 18 years of age) receive a single dose of Tdap in place of the Td (tetanus-diphtheria) booster previously recommended for all adults and adolescents. In addition, the CDC has issued recommendations for specific adult populations: • Adults who have or who anticipate having close contact with infants younger than 12 months of age. (e.g., parents, grandparents younger than 65 years of age, childcare providers, healthcare workers) • Healthcare personnel in hospitals or ambulatory care settings who have direct patient contact. Priority is given to vaccination of workers in direct contact with infants younger than 12 months of age. • Pregnant women after delivery, before discharge from the hospital or birthing center. Vaccine Safety The Tdap vaccine is safe. Reactions to the vaccine are usually mild. The most common reactions after vaccination are pain and redness at the injection site. Other adverse events are possible. Please consult with your doctor. A healthcare professional should be informed if you have developed Guillain-Barré syndrome within six weeks following a prior tetanus vaccination, if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have experienced Arthustype hypersensitivity reactions (i.e., rare but severe, exaggerated local reactions) following a prior tetanus vaccine. FACT: The Chinese refer to pertussis as the “cough of 100 days” due to the prolonged, dry cough that is experienced by infected individuals. FACT: Pertussis can be difficult to diagnose because early symptoms may appear like the common cold or bronchitis. FACT: Pertussis causes coughing spells that can affect breathing, eating and sleeping. It can even lead to cracked ribs and hospitalization. This time of year is very difficult for our young, deployed men and women who are away from their families for the holidays. One of our own, Jamison Lupo '02,is on an 8-month deployment. The morale can get very low with the exhausting schedule they keep on top of being away from loved ones for such long periods of time. Team Peace will be selling "peace" bracelets during the lunch periods starting Friday, November 19th. All of the proceeds will go to providing care packages to the 20 sailors who are under our Jamie's command. They run the nuclear reactor which powers the USS Abraham Lincoln Aircraft Carrier. We would love to raise enough money to send each of these sailors a care package for Christmas. By purchasing a bracelet, you can help us with this task and perhaps it can be a visual reminder for you to pray for these young men and women and also for Peace. The prices will range from $15-$25....donations are also appreciated. Jane Lommel President BRAG ~~~~~ Cathedral has established a Concussion Management Policy, shown below: 9 Concussion Management Policy Cathedral High School The recognition and treatment of athletes who have suffered a concussion has become a national priority. As a result of an increasing number of studies that have revealed that concussions, not properly treated, can result in permanent mental difficulties. The data also suggests that concussions can lead to the development of dementia earlier than expected and has led to mandates by the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), NCAA and the NFL. The NFHS mandated rule states “Effective with the 2010 high school season, any player who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors associated with a concussion must be removed from the game and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional”. Recovery from a concussion requires limitation of physical activity, especially sports activity such as practice, drills, games, and at times even physical education classes. In significantly symptomatic athletes, mental activity should also be limited to allow the brain to heal. These activities may include limiting assignments, allowing greater time to complete quizzes and tests or assignments and less homework. Such activities as watching TV, texting, and video games may also slow the recovery from the concussion. Neurocognitive testing such as the ImPACT test is a computerized test that documents the athlete’s cognitive and speed skills. The test has been validated as an accurate measure of brain function recovery following a sports concussion. All athletes should have a baseline test before practice or competition, and should an athlete sustain a concussion, a repeat test can be performed and compared to the baseline test. This can help show the degree of injury and help measure when recovery has occurred. Cathedral High School has implemented ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) for our student athletes. Before the concussed athlete can return to action, the most current standard of care of the sports concussion includes the following: (1) the athlete must be asymptomatic at rest; (2) a neurocognitive test such as the ImPACT test must have returned to baseline; and (3) the athlete must be asymptomatic with activity. This evaluation should be done by a physician trained in the treatment and management of concussions. Utilizing the above standards, as well as experience and judgment, this physician will be able to determine when the athlete has completely recovered from the concussion. The Cathedral High School Administration, coaches, and medical staff are striving to keep your child’s health and safety at the forefront of the student athletic experience. If you have any questions regarding concussion management, please feel free to contact Mike Hunker at 968-7361. If you have not converted your Prephq registration over to Connect, please do so by going 12 to the initial Connect page (see below). This will allow you to search effectively for scholarships. This is the form for applying for any need based financial aid. It cannot be filed until after January 1 but there are some preliminary things you can do. First, realize that it is only available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov They used to make paper copies and we could put one in the senior mailboxes but they don’t produce those anymore. Secondly, you (and your student) will need a pin number that you will use to sign your FAFSA. This can be obtained now at the above mentioned website under Step One. Each state has their own deadline for FAFSA submission so you’ll want to pay close attention to that. For anyone that will attend a college in Indiana the due date is March 10, 2011. If you need assistance in filling out the FAFSA there is a “help day” called College Goal Sunday (www.collegegoalsunday.org). This is being held on Sunday February 20th. It offers free help from a financial aid expert who will sit down with you and help you complete the form that day. If you go to the website it will show you the locations in the Indianapolis area. Lastly, those who have attended the National Center for College Costs seminar have the services of Dave Murray, 877-687-7291 or info@collegecosts.com. Please feel free to contact him with any detailed questions you may have regarding financial aid. Students should actively be looking for scholarships at this time as well. Although our PrepHQ/ConnectEdu website is still being transformed the Scholarship section is up and running with over 6,000 listings. Go to ConnectEdu at 14 www.connectedu.net/?hs=cathedral. Under the “Paying for College” section go to Search for Scholarships. Another good source which we also recommend to students is Fastweb,( www.fastweb.com) .This is the largest, free scholarship search on the web. The majority of my students have completed at least one or more college applications at this point. For those who haven’t and those who are still going to complete applications, they should shoot for having them done by Thanksgiving. A reminder that any students who have applications with December 1 deadlines, and I need to write recommendation letters for, need to turn in their Application Checklist sheets to me by next Wednesday, November 10th. Thanks for all your support and help in working with your students in the college process. This class has been on top of things from day one and have really followed the guidelines to help us get their materials out in a timely manner. Class Service Projects As an insight during Advent, ponder this scripture: “…Through the gathering darkness of Advent, we muse in hope on the dawning of Christ, the Sun of Justice.” This scripture reminds us to be cognizant that we bring special joy and light to others in our service that we perform in the month of December during Advent. In December, sophomores will be helping to serve our popular spaghetti dinner to the Lord’s Pantry members on Wednesday, December 8 from 3:30-7:15 PM. You may also join our outreach on Saturday, December11, 10:00-1:30, when juniors will be serving up a fabulous lunch for the Saturday noon meal at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. Seniors Katie Gordon, Connor Ashby and Drew Myers will be passing out their 250 scarves that they have made for the homeless. Freshmen will begin helping at the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on December 4, 5, 18 and 19 to help special families to shop for their Christmas. Details on all of these on-going class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities as wonderful expressions of thanksgiving, giving and grace. We are coordinating a special day of events combining reading, athletics and other passions such as art, music and dance which will be held at the University of Indianapolis. The theme for this day is “MAKE IT MINE”. On this day, we are featuring interests that students can develop in high school to help keep them engaged. We are also asking students to sign up as READING BUDDIES with these middle schoolers to encourage them to read eight 16 books a year. It has been shown that reading eight books is as helpful as going to summer school. Students are needed to help with the stations for the MAKE IT MINE day on Saturday, Dec 4, from 9:30-2:30 PM at IPS #106. Details are listed below. Click here for a sign up form and please email it to Mrs. Halstead. Our next meeting for the Saturday, Dec 4 event is Wednesday, December 1 after school in the SLC. Please email Jasmine Whitaker, Imani Parker-Robinson, or Mrs. Halstead (chalstead@cathedral-irish.org) with your questions. Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all hours received since the start of school. The status of service hours for seniors will be shown as satisfactory or unsatisfactory on their second quarter report card. For the academic year of 2010-11, freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2011. The status of service hours for these underclassmen will be shown as satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the third quarter report card. Today’s Gospel reveals his tendency to give his guests so much more than they need—more, even, than they can manage to eat. Not only was everyone fed; seven whole basketfuls of food were left over! In Scripture, the number seven is often used to represent completeness or fullness. So we could say that Jesus doesn’t just want to give us more than we need; he even wants there to be too many leftovers! 26 As followers of Jesus, we can trust that God will provide for each of us so much that we will have plenty left over. He wants to give us an overabundance of hope, peace, joy, purpose, and freedom. He wants to heal us, energize us, and set us free—so much so that we would have the equivalent of seven basketfuls left over to give to everyone else! Still, there are times when we may not feel deserving. Or there may be times when past sins or disappointments have led us to doubt that God wants to help us. When thoughts like these come, try thinking about how generously Jesus gives himself in his body and blood. Day after day, week after week, he comes and feeds us with an overabundance of grace and favor. We come to the altar empty and needy, and he fills our every need, nourishing us with the bread of his life. We can actually feel him drawing us back to him as we taste and see his goodness. There may be times when we sense that some part of our lives is empty. We may be far from home. Or we may be feeling drained of joy and peace because of overwork. Or we may be spending so much time caring for someone else that we feel we have nothing left over for ourselves. In situations like these, we can always find comfort in Jesus’ eucharistic presence— whether at Mass or in silent adoration. He can fill our emptiness as we gaze on him and pour out our hearts. We should never underestimate the power of God to provide for us. God truly is a generous—even sloppy—host! “Jesus, fill those empty corners of my life with your abundant provisions—even those dark corners caused by my sin. Help me, Lord, to trust in you.” Blessings, Principal Cathedral High School dworland@cathedral-irish.org 27
