Hola clase.
Señor Deem no se siente bien hoy. Algo ataca su pecho.
Hello class.
Señor Deem doesn’t feel very well today, so I will be his voice. Please take out paper, there is a big
grammar point today and he needs everybody to pay attention to me. I’m Graham.
The person interpreting for Mr. Deem is Me, Graham
You’ll need a full sheet of paper and your vocabulary list. Today’s grammar point is a bit complex.
Please pay attention.
Today’s grammar point is titled: Present Subjunctive
Please add that to the top of your notes.
Present Subjunctive:
As the title suggests, the present subjunctive is a merging
between two tenses. The present tense and the
subjunctive (mood) We can call it a tense it’s ok.
They are combined with a “que” or in English,, “that”
I’m saving my voice for the end when it gets really
complex!!!!
Please don’t make me talk until then. Thank you.
You’ll know the things you need to write.
Ok.
The present subjunctive is exactly what it says, it is two
tenses combined with a “that” or “que” in Spanish.
For example: I hope that she dances.
I hope is present tense
That = que
She dances = subjunctive or opposite endings
There are a few verbs (3) that you really need to know
how to conjugate in the present tense: Querer,
necesitar, and esperar.
Conjugate them now on your notes:
Querer (ie) to want present tense
Querer (ie)– to want Present tense people!!!!

Make good and sure that you know these very very
well!!!!
Now I will present the subjunctive endings:
Ar verbs (remember, this is an opposite ending tense)
Instead of what looks like a present tense ar verb, I will
use the “er” present tense endings (except the yo form)
Ar verbs
e
emos
es
e
en
Easy huh? Did you see how closely related to the present
tense it is? Except it is opposite endings.
Er/ir verbs (you try it) take a guess

Opposite endings. Anything in the shaded area from
your vocab list will occur in this new subjunctive
tense(mood). Always opposite endings.
Now, the combining of the two tenses.
Pay attention closely and ask questions if you have them.
Dar == dé it is already irregular
Ir vaya it’s just weird.
I want
Quiero
You to listen
When you combine these two together you insert
inbetween a “que”
I want you to listen = I want that you listen
Quiero que
Then the next part is the opposite endings.
Listen in the you form.
Escuchar you subjunctive = escuches
Notice the opposite ending for the second half of this
sentence.
I want you to listen = I want that you listen
Quiero que escuches.
Quiero is in the present tense
Escuches is in the subjunctive tense (mood)
Combined always with “que”
Now it’s your turn.
We want Sally to sing.
Or in other words: We want that sally sings.
Write it down please.
Valerie?
Queremos que Sally cante.
Muy bien. Two sentences joined together with a “que”
Now
I need her to dance.
Reworded: I need that she dance
Somebody wants another person to do something.
Melon
Necesito que baile. You can say necesito que ella baile
just to clarify that it is the she form since the yo form and
the she form are the same, but you don’t have to.
Now the new verb: esperar = to hope
They hope that I have a fiesta.
Esperan que tenga una fiesta.
The green is present tense
Combined with “que”
The red is the subjunctive

I will teach by writing. I will attempt to do as little talking
as possible. Please respect my voice by being quiet
today. Gracias.

Let’s start to put this together… Ohh how scary.
I have still a few people talking. I need everybody eyes
up here, no interruptions please
Present subjunctive.
I want you to listen.
Green = present tense
Red = subjunctive
How do you say I want? = yo quiero or simply quiero
Quiero
Now the subjunctive comes next, but we always need
something inbetween that would be “que” or “that” in
English
So if I said, I want you to listen.
I would actually say I want that you listen.
Quiero que escuches
Questions?
Now you try one.
She wants him to dance.
She wants that he dances
Remember green = present
Red = subjunctive
But you always have to have “que” inbetween the
two!!!!!!!!
Paige?
Quiere que baile
Do you need me to go?
Remember, you should try to reword this with a “that” in
between the two so you don’t get mixed up.
Joey????
¿Necesitas que vaya?
Do you need that I go?
DOP’s
I hope that you kiss me.
Espero que me beses

Sr. Deem is sick today. Something is attacking his voice
and chest! However, we have a major grammar point to
teach today. Please respect his voice and we will have a
silent learning day today.
It has worked in all my classes so far, I know it will work
here, but you need to really pay attention take notes.

Now the third verb. Although it is new, it is easy to
conjugate.
To hope esperar present tense
espero
esperamos
esperas
espera
Esperan
Yes. It should be the easiest thing we do. Sadly, people
try to make this too complicated and they forget the
present tense.
Remember, the title today,,, Present Subjunctive
Now for the subjunctive:
The subjunctive is opposite endings.
Green = present tense
I’ll use red for subjunctive
Remembering that it is going to be opposite endings.
For

Combining two sentences together. Kind of like a “but”

The first part of the sentence is present tense
Followed by a “that” = “que”
The last part of the sentence is subjunctive.

These three verbs are way more important than you
know.
Remember, you will say one of these verbs, then a “que”
then the subjunctive.
