During the first century A.D., Korea was known as Choson. The people of the Korean peninsula were organized into three large kingdoms: the Koguryo, the Paekche, and the Silla. By the seventh century A.D., one government, the Silla, and one major religion, Buddhism, had been established. Through the centuries, Korea’s history was marked by violence. The armies of Japan and China invaded Korea many times. From 1910 to 1945, Japan ruled Korea. After Japan’s defeat at the end of World War II, Russia took control of the northern part of the country. There they set up a Communist government. The southern part of Korea was independent. The Communists in the north, with the help of china, tried to take over the south. The United States and other countires of the United Nations came to the aid of South Korea. From 1950 to 1953, there was a war between the two sides. At the end of the war, Korea was still a divided country. Although both sides signed a truce, they never signed a peace treaty. They agreed to create a border that would divide the north part of Korea from the southern part. They called this border the Demarcation Line. The land on either side of the line is the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). It would be free from the threat of military attack. This zone is two and a half miles wide. It stretches across the peninsula near the 38th parallel (latitude). In the years since this zone was created, the two sides have had many talks. They have not reached any agreement to end this division. Directions: After reading the Brief History of Korea above. For each sentence below, write True or False in the yellow area.
