Course Objectives
An Introduction to Women's Studies in Korea is designed to help students understand what
Women's Studies entails, and to consider a variety of themes such as family, work, and
sexuality from a gender perspective.
Course Description:
Women's Studies as a discipline in Korea has developed rapidly since the latter half of the
1970s. Recently research endeavors has been extended to a wide context in Asia involving
Women's Studies practitioners in other countries in Asia.
This course is an introduction to Women's Studies on Korea covering some theoretical
discussions on feminism and concepts such as patriarchy as well as social phenomena of
contemporary Korea.
Required Text & Supplementary Materials:
You will be able to download the readings needed for each lesson from the ICU web site. In
addition, in the first week, you will be provided with an optical reading list of Korea and
Women-related materials as well as a list of suggested Women's Studies-related websites
from Korea and the Asian region.
