Federal, state, and local protection and product liability – 8 days A. Students will explain why and how the law focuses on the protection of consumers. B. Students will discuss the trade practices that are prohibited by consumer law. C. Students will discuss the contribution of local and state governments to D. Students will define product liability. E. Students will explain how strict liability law can protect consumers injured by defective products. Writing assignments – Write an honest praise/complaint letter following proper business letter style and misleading advertisement activity. Assessment – Test #1 II. Legal aspects of marriage and divorce – 7 days A. Students will discuss how the law affects premarital and marital relationships. B. Students will explain the uses of prenuptial agreements. C. Students will name the rights and duties of husbands and wives. D. Students will discuss ways other than divorce by which marriages can end. E. Students will identify grounds for a traditional and a no-fault divorce. F. Students will name topics usually covered in a separation agreement. Legal consequences of death – 5 days A. Students will explain why an orderly distribution of a decedent’s estate is necessary. B. Students will discuss the benefits of making a will. C. Students will describe how a valid will is made. Writing assignment – Create a will of a fictional person following all legal requirements. Assessment – Test #3 IV. Legal protection of creditors and debtors and use of credit cards – 8 days A. Students will discuss four types of laws that protect creditors. B. Students will explain how liens are created. C. Students will explain how liens can protect creditor’s rights. D. Students will discuss the six types of laws that protect debtors. E. Students will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using credit cards. Writing assignment – Essay on banking activities after research from lending institutions. Publisher – Create a brochure of consumer’s right under credit law. Poster activity – Create posters informing consumers of federal laws that protect them/ Assessment – Test #4 Outcomes: 1) Students will be able to analyze the relationship between the laws that govern sales and consumer protection. 2) Students will be able to explain the laws that apply to marriage, child custody, and divorce. 3) Students will understand the legal consequences of death and the need for a will. 4) Students will be able to analyze the purpose and need for commercial paper, credit cards, secured transactions, and the consequences of bankruptcy.
