Introduction to Art & Design Course Outline: Semester One, 2014 Course Lecturers: Annemarie Meijnen ameijnen@unitec.ac.nz Michael Freeman mfreeman@unitec.ac.nz Course aim: To introduce students to the practical skills that enhance confidence, promote self directed learning, and develop strategies for further academic study within art and design. Learning outcomes: The student will 1 Identify and apply the skills of drawing, 3D modelling and information technology within an art and design context. 2 Demonstrate an understanding of the use of literacy and numeracy in identifying formal components in art and design. 3 Develop and use personal and group learning strategies of research, analysis and documentation in the study of art & design. 4 Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of art and design practice and methodologies. 5 Develop a personal portfolio of work for further academic study in art and design and lifelong learning. Your success: To be successful it is important that you attend and participate in all classes and that you are punctual. If for any reason you are unable to attend a class, or if you are going to be late, please ring, text or email your lecturers. Contact details are available on Moodle. Course documents, project briefs and other relevant resources will be uploaded to Moodle to help you stay up to date with your work. Get in the habit of checking the Introduction to Art & Design Moodle page regularly. You must attempt all assessments and gain an overall pass grade in order to pass the course. Course Commitment: This course involves 13 hours per week of class time, including tutorials, and approximately 16.5 hours per week of self directed learning. You should expect to be regularly working out of class in the studio on Fridays, and at home, in order to develop and complete course work and portfolio tasks. Seminars and tutorials: From time to time you will participate in 1:1 tutorials and group seminars to develop your communication and presentation skills in relation to your work. Overview of assessments: 1. Assessment criteria and weighting Visual Diary 50% Research & Analysis 25% Exploration 25% Portfolio 50% (hard copy & digital) Application Communication 25% 25% Formative (developmental) assessment is ongoing throughout the semester. It takes the form of verbal discussion and feedback with your lecturers; and written feedback following individual tutorials and seminars. Summative assessment takes place in week 15 and is final. At this time your visual diary/dairies and portfolio are submitted and graded. 2. Required practical research exercises and briefs: Face mask A research based 3D construction project; investigating facial anatomy using 2D planar materials Style Research a selected historical or contemporary style. Elements of this style are developed and applied in an artwork of your own. Human Story Human studies drawings and visual narrative techniques are explored, leading to an illustrated story or event from your life. Tree House Concept drawing and development (2D & 3D) from initial idea through to a well-constructed model that is incorporated into final presentation drawings. 3. Optional research exercises and briefs will be selected with advice from your lecturers and will reflect what is needed in your portfolio for your target pathway.
