Catalog Description: Hands-on experience on Hardware/Software co-design of embedded computing systems: architecture, hardware/software components, interfacing, and communication issues. (1 Credits) Prerequisites EEL 4709C Computer Design Corerequisites EEL 4740L EMBEDDED COMPUTING SYSTEMS Course Objectives: Be able to create an embedded system project. Be able to compile and execute a software application on the embedded platform. Be able to handle embedded GUI development project using FPGA and EDK software. Relationship of course to program outcomes: a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems g) an ability to communicate effectively j) k) a knowledge of contemporary issues an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice Tentative weekly schedule and topics (may be adjusted based on other activities): Week No. Dates Activities and Topics 1 01/07/13 Lab Introduction 2 01/14/13 3 01/21/13 4 01/28/13 5 02/04/13 6 02/11/13 7 02/18/13 8 02/25/13 9 Lab Report Due Lab 1: Simple Hardware Design 02/01/13 Lab 2: Adding IP and Custom IP to a Hardware Design Lab 02/15/13 Lab 3: Writing Basic Software Applications 03/01/13 03/04/13 Lab 4: Software Development Kit (SDK) Lab 03/15/13 10 03/11/13 Spring Break 11 03/18/13 12 03/25/13 Lab 5: Real-Time Operating System 13 04/01/13 Final Project Informal Review 14 04/08/13 15 04/15/13 Final Project Presentation and Demonstration 16 04/22/13 Final Week / Final Exams Notes (MLK Holiday Monday 01/21) Spring Break 03/29/13 04/19/13 03/18/13 Final Project Proposal due date & Last day to drop a course with a DR grade Final Project Document due date. All students must demo their projects by this week Note: Final Project Report On-line submission due on Dec 2nd, 2013 (11:55PM) Word format (DOC, DOCX) or PDF format. Lab Group: Two students in a group use one computer to work on the lab and one lab report is needed per group. For the final project is required a group of 4 students submitting one final project document and one presentation. Lab Grading Policy: 1. Lab implementation and reports: 50% a. There are 5 labs, each carrying equal weight: 10% 2. Final Lab Project: 50% a. Project Proposal: 10% b. Formal Presentation of Implementation, Simulation and Result (Completed) to the rest of the class: 20% c. Final Lab Report 20% 3. Please be advised that 1 day late submission will suffer from 50% reduction, 2 day late 75% reduction and 3 day or more 100% reduction. Hard copy will NOT be considered as a confirmation of submission. Academic Responsibility: 1. For individual work submitted, it is expected that each student will submit their own original work. Any evidence of duplication, cheating or plagiarism will result at least a failing grade for the course. “Florida International University is a community dedicated to generating and imparting knowledge through excellent teaching and research, the rigorous and respectful exchange of ideas, and community service. All students should respect the right of other to have an equitable opportunity to learn and honestly to demonstrate the quality of their learning. Therefore, all students are expected to adhere to a standard of academic conduct, which demonstrate respect for themselves, their fellow students, and the educational mission of the University. All students are deemed by the University to understand that if they are found responsible for academic misconduct, they will be subject to the Academic Misconduct procedures, sanctions, as outlines in the Student Handbook.” 2. You are required to attend the laboratory in time. Absences are excused for medical reasons and extenuating circumstances only with proper documentation. Conflicts with work and situations regarding personal decisions are not acceptable excused absences. Unexcused absences will result in the loss of points from your final grade. REPORT PRESENTATION TEMPLATE The report of Lab1 will have the format and sections that are described as follows: 1. Cover Page: Include the lab number and title, student name, student ID, FIU email address, name of the instructor, name of other group members, and date of the lab. Title Page: 1. Course Title and number 3. Experiment Number 5. Date Report Submitted 2. Experiment Title 4. Date of Experiment 6. Name and Panther ID First page: 1. Title of experiment and Number 2. Objective(s) of Experiment Second page and subsequent pages. (Each item does not have to be in a separate page): 1. Procedure (25%) Describe how was the set up of the experiment (components, variables to measure, equipment and functions used, etc.) Include all possible diagrams (Block and Schematics) to help explain your procedure. This section contains a step-by-step description of what you did in this lab. Please be concise. 2. Analysis of Results (35%) ? manual. Include the question and answer (if any) provided by the symbol in the lab In addition, provide the block diagram, Microprocessor Hardware Specification (MHS) and User Constraint File (UCF). Finally, include a screenshot of the output displayed on the HyperTerminal. 3. Conclusions (35%) Discuss if the system is doing what it is supposed to do, if not explain why. Check if the objectives are met. Discuss your difficulties and how you overcome them. Describe which experiences you gain from conducting the experiment. Additional Notes and Policies: 1. Every student must complete the lab activity at the laboratory, before submitting the lab report. 2. All reports can be turned in earlier than the deadline.
