Bones 4 Life www.bones4life.org A Campaign to Help Children Build Stronger Bones Bone Health • It is vital that children build strong bones before they reach their mid to late twenties. • Lack of exercise and poor diets when we are young can increase the risk of osteoporosis in later life. • We want children to eat well, move more and get enough vitamin D. The Bone Bank • Our bone mass naturally decreases as we age. • However, if we ‘bank’ bone when we are young, it can help prevent osteoporosis later in life. Building Stronger Bones We can build stronger bone by: • Eating a well-balanced diet containing calcium-rich food. • Doing regular weight-bearing exercise. • Getting enough vitamin D. YouGov Survey (2008) • 49% young people did not know that there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. • 56% young people did not know that exercise could help to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. • 1 in 3 did not know about the role diet can play in minimising risk. How Schools Can Enter 1. 2. 3. 4. Practise some simple Boogie For Your Bones dance steps using the video and dance plans found on www.bones4life.org/bonefactor. Create a sequence of steps to the Boogie For Your Bones music, or music of your own choice. You can use the sequence of steps provided or make up your own. Take photographs of the children performing the dance or record a short video clip. This does not have to be the whole dance. Get the whole class together and write a 100-word paragraph explaining why and how the class loves building stronger bones.
